Cold & Smokey RD28Ti - GR/GU
Hello everybody out there,
I have a 1998 GR/GU Shorty, with the RD28Ti ( 2.8 turbo diesel, 6 Cyl.), which is great, it pulls well drives nice and is good on fuel.
However on cold mornings (which are common here in the UK ), she seems to smoke and is a little rough in the mornings during start-up, the glow plug light glows, for about 6 to 10 seconds, she turns over and starts normally within seconds. However there is always a large plume of white diesel smelling smoke for the first 30 seconds, and a little roughness. After about a minute she seems to settle down.
I know she's an old style Diesel, and with 90,000 miles ( about 160,000 km) under her belt I would not expect perfect start, Apart from age there are no other problems just the smoky starts.
Anybody have any ideas?

Hi!
Check glow plugs first, then check nozzles.
I reckon that the fuel pressure in the nozzles at the moment of open are wrong.

Does she start OK when hot/warm? Diesel pumps on these are a known problem. However, if not, sounds like maybe one or two glows aren't working well. Check the voltage to the plugs and change them anyway if you don't know how long ago they were done.
