    ZD30 engines and oily intake plumbing

    Whilst wading thru the Factory manual trying to get my head around the exact purposes of the two adjustments (stroke and end stop) on the Turbo Actuator I came across this little gem of wisdom.

    Direct quote from the Engine Management section of the factory manual with my boldface for emphasis...
    Check that the engine oil level is between MIN and MAX of the
    dipstick. (When the engine oil amount is more than MAX, the
    oil flows into the inlet duct through the blow-by gas passage
    ,
    and the turbocharger is misjudged failure.)


    Now I am old school with emphasis on the old and when I was a young 'un I learnt overfilling sumps could be bad juju (oil foaming etc etc) so I personally never fill past max level... and Yes, I know that flys in the face of the supposed factory fix of the series 1 and 2 grenades.

    I will happily add a taddy bit of oil during the service interval but the number of times I have seen overfilled (and I mean significantly so) oil quantity after 'professionals' have serviced ZD30's is amazing.

    What gave me a BIG light bulb moment tho was the fact that when I used to clean the Intercooler and MAF etc I was always confused why many people complained that it was necessary as they would be full of grunge and you have to fit catch cans etc to stop it and yet my intercooler, MAF and plumbing was always pretty clean with minimal residues.

    Sooooo...
    Could overfilling sumps on ZD30's (which appears a common practice around the 'net) be a primary, I stress primary not sole, cause of a huge percentage of the oily residues observed in ZD30 Inlet plumbing, shitty MAF readings etc?

    Thoughts everyone?

    I don't know but my mates patrol was spewing oil everywhere after buying a new secondhand patrol.
    Took it straight and they drained 6ltrs of oil. Yes 6ltrs
    2011 GU8 ST 3.0 CRD, ARB Bullbar with IPF spotties, scrub bars and side steps, Snorkel, Dual Battery system, Waeco fridge, Turbo Timer, ARB Roof Rack with 5 IPF spotties across the front, Custom full Leather Bucket seats, DPchip, 3" Taipan exhaust, ARE Intercooler & scoop, Autron EGT/Boost and dual volt gauges, ARB front locker.

    You are more than likely on to something with this thought ET . Definately worthwhile considering thats for sure .
