warmer months, which engine oil to use?

G,day all.My trol is due for an oil and filter change. I've looked at the charts and 10w 40 energy conservation type oil is recomended, but the engine has done 260000 ks. I can get a 6lt 20w50 container on special is that too heavy a grade?

The starting number is more important for the summer starts mate - lower the number, thinner the cold viscosity o the oil (for easier starts). The 20w shouldn't matter too greatly in summer, and truth be told, the second number (50) is the hot temp viscosity of the oil, and being you've got 260000 on the clock, I'd be using a 50 grade oil as a standard all year round regardless .. I use penrite 15w50 in mine all year (live in Brissy so winters are mild and don't generally need lower than 15w) ...

No worries mate - seeing as you're in Victoria (I believe), you might want a 10w50 for winter (even lower 5w50 if you're in a really icy area).

ive put new oil in mine yesterday and bought the valvoline 15w40. as before it was running on 10w30. found that the is 15 better. thats in my 2.8t GQ.

I thought the higher weight oil would cling to the engine a bit better because the old trol is sometimes left standing for up to a week.

Hi mate - I'm no oil buff but isn't that what all this magnatec and other technology about? Meant to stick to the parts rather than sit in the sump? Not sure though - just my understanding of why they mess with oils......

The local repco salesman reckons all oils should stay coated on engine parts, but that magnatech and others have marketted the idea a bit better than the others. It is hard to know who speakum with forked tongue, cause everyone is pushing their own generic products these days. I don't know who stocks penrite in town, cause our auto pro has closed shop.
