2004 Y61 Whine
Hi,
Bought this Patrol in 2009, been great, has 213,000 on the clock. About 4 weeks ago it started to whine, no previose issue except a rebuilt alternator about 4 months ago. Put it in for the 200 thou service and was told to go to a turbo specialist who advised it was turbo, replaced it and whine still there, furthur diagnosis was advised timing gears but no guarantee and no real confidence from 3 mechanics. Took it to a diesal specialist who advised intercooler, replaced it, same whine. Diesal specialist said definatly not timing gears, he wants another crack and am taking it back Monday. I have no issue with the work done, peeps have found broken stuff and fixed it, all good, but if anyone has heard this or got any ideas I'd appreciate it.
Whine can be heard here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2xPGYNEhTc&feature=plcp

Hi mate jump over to the intros and let us know a bit about yourself, its just something the forum asks of all newbies.
You'll get a better response
Is the noise there standing still, have you a snorkel fitted?
Not your tensioner pulley ??? Just had listen sounds external
Very long screw driver to your ear and touch a few areas with care.

Howdy, will do, yep have a snorkel and noise is there still and moving, in gear and out, clutch in and out, some say not in idle but I reckon it's there, just not as pronounced, whine increases at revs, in top barley noticeable but same speed down the gears louder and higher in pitch.

There have been some very experienced mechanics that have had a crack at this, hoping to find someone who has heard it before.

I have similar sound from around turbo area (apparently) but only when boost is 10psi of higher in my GU1V with 3 inch exhaust. As it is only there under load, can't hear it in shed. Checked all hoses before and after turbo but no luck. Definately not turbo itself so must be a leak somewhere. Will try soapy water next on all joins. At about 150klm,I suppose I should change belts that have been in shed for a couple of months. Will follow thread with interest.
At the end of the day, all you have is yourself and all you need is your friends (and in our case our Patrol)

Car hasn't got log books but is an ex telstra truck so well serviced, I havn't replaced the drive belt so thks for the suggestion. Wizard mine is anytime the moter revs it's noticable, I reckon I can hear it at idle and in top but it gets mixed in with other noises so hard to pick up, at 100 I can take it to 4th and u can hear it wind up pretty easy, basically anytime the accelerator is down it's whining. The diesal guys are taking it back on Monday and will drop everything they can off it to try and work it out.

Can't be doing any damage if you're still driving it, will be interesting to find what the culprit is.
If a diesel mech can't pick it up standing next to it, got buckleys doing it from key board.
Would like to be there though as I like diagnosing things like Newby
