Just finished removing and cleaning the inlet manifold, before that I removed the egr to manifold pipe to have a look, yep needs doing i will try one of those cleaners in a can it cleaned the throttle body ok but did nothing to the manifold.
I did notice a lot more sludge in number 3 and 4 ports, probably why pistons 3 and 4 crack.
Have not driven to far yet but the egt seem to be about 50c cooler.
Try using brake cleaner, it should do the job cleaning the inside of the manifold. Not treating you like an idiot but make sure you remove the manifold to do the job.

No problem mc97gq, took off the manifold and used degreaser that i already had, took a couple of goes but it came up very good, the cleaner in a can was threebond diesel engine conditioner.
I wanted to try it just to see what if anything these products will do which is not much, I have blocked the egr so should not be a problem any more.
Motor has only done 85000 km surprising just how much sludge there was.
There is a marine engine cleaner available that foam fills a outboard engine to clean it out.
I used it some yrs back cant remember the brand sorry.
You spray most of can in running motor, shut down, spray rest to empty can let soak , and re-start engine to flush.
Now before you tell me bad Idea, remember the cost of a 150hp outboard engine is more than a small car and if it was so bad I doubt a marine mech would use it on something that takes people 20 N-Mile offshore.
I had it done to a 150HP merc, no harm was done.
The cleaner is also used to clean out a engine that has been in "winter-ised" storage.
There are marine storage spray products, that protect from no use of engine.
Cleaner May be of some use here!.
Cheers
Another Idea is if you are removing a manifold.
Oven foam cleaner.
Used this on 2nd hand engine pipe that had bad build up of soot took a few applications as it was thick but did work.
the foam is a good way to get coverage on the inside of a pipe and cheap.
Subaru also do a cleaner called top end cleaner the part number is sa459 , this is one of the best products out there , will remove fuel varnish gum and pcv build up , we have seen it remove locked pistons on subaru boxer engines that were unadle to be turned over , this is a foam type cleaner as well . regards jase c
