I recently had to replace the timing belt in my 2.8 found that the fuel pump had been moved all the way one way (retarded or advanced) - the guy that work on my bus found that he could move the pump a bit like a distributor. Better to get some advise from a diesel mechanic about this or somebody else on here may know more

yes thanks all for your info i have found the fuel pump to be 1 tooth out of timing ??
Dont know how this would have moved though as its been months since it was replaced it does have signs of rubbing on something tough as there is a continous rub line on the flat side of the belt??
about where the cover meets the engine perhaps this was not installed correctly?

You would have to hope it was - it's usually part of the kit

yes the tensioner and idler was replaced i saw the old units and was very close to destruction.
but still unsore how the pump could jump the belt?
Was running rough on start up due to 2 glow plugs being down but should not have been bad enough to cause it to jump has this happened to anyone else?

I wont conclude it was the 2 glowplugs that let the belt jump but the possebility seems logic to me ?

Check the harmonic balancer isn't loose quite common for them to undo it when doing the timing belt and not loctite it and it works it's way loose chews out the keyway and you would get a belt jumping teeth and then valves hitting pistons and a dead engine.

MAybe Belt wasnt tightened enough, they do stretch a little so might have been enough once worn in to skip tooth
coupled with running rough problem with glow plugs might have pushed it over the tooth perhaps.
