GU headlight probs

Hey guys I have a prob with my headlights not working, the beams and park lights work but the actual headlights dont, I have checked all fuses and all are ok. the left hand one has gone on and off for a little while but the other night the misses didnt wait long enough for the glow plugs to warm and flattened the batt dead since the both head lights have not worked. I was just wondering if anyone knew what to do or where to go from here. I have also tried to get the globe out to check it but cant figure that out either how the hell do you get them out.
any suggestions will be much appreciated.

So both the low and high beam on both sides don't work?

The fuses for the headlights on the GUs are located in the fuse box under the bonnet, near the main battery. There are two, one for the driver side low and high beam and another fuse for the passenger side low and hi beam. I would first double check these.

Removing the headlight bulbs is a real PITA, some people find it easier to remove the grill and headlights to replace the bulbs. I normally just donate some blood and do them in the car.

Start with the driver side light this is the easiest one. The electrical plug at the bulb just pulls out, this can be very tight and sometimes it can be melted on. Using firm pressure pull the plug towards the battery giving it a slight wiggle. You may feel like a spring tension acting against you, this is ok, thats the spring clip that holds the bulb in.

Once the plug is off I would then check for power in the two coloured wires in the plug. The horizontal one should have power when on low beam and the vertical one should have power on high beam. Also check the earth (black wire).

Remove the black rubber boot from around the bulb (it just pulls out, make a note of which way is up for refitting later).

Now you can see most of the bulb you should also be able to see the metal spring clip that holds the bulb in, you just squeeze the ends of the metal spring together and pull it out past its locking tab it will now hinge out of the way.

You can now remove the bulb.

Don't touch the glass part of the bulb.

if the fuses are o.k it can only be the globes. Follow Yendors walkthrough on how to remove the globes and check them. OT, I can't believe ppl would go through all the trouble of removing the grille and h/light assy just to get the globe out. It ain't hard at all to do. The plugs are just a little tight thats all.

X2 a bit of skin off the knuckles saves a lot of messing around, time is a.valuable thing, don't waiste it. You could be out bush an hour earlier,
And besides it will make it easier next time, coz A you will know what to do and B your knuckles will be toughened from the experience, lol sorry mate got Johnny with me

Thanks heaps fellas. I finally worked it out the thing that caught me was the rubber seal was just as tough to get off as the clip so I thought I would have to remove the grill and headlights but did not want to do that without seeing if it could be done. But I eventually got the boot off and then saw the clip.

Is there power to the socket?
If not check the fuse and if that is OK the stalk switch
If so check the earth

Sometimes with 4x4 globes,,, the lead at the back of the globe
flatten out. thats when you see ppl hit the housing and the light goes
on , a sure sign that lead has worn away , . Just something to check
