17 or 16 inch rims on Gu

    G'day,

I'm currently looking at buying a '06 patrol, currently running standard 275/65/17. The tyres are ready for replacing.
Is if better to go for 16" steelies instead? What is the difference in $ when rebooting the 17' rims with say 285/70 verses buyin a 16" set up running similar size and say BFG A/T's

16" will be a fair bit cheaper for wheels and tyres. And even the difference between 16" to 15" steel wheels is sometimes half!

People's personal preferences differ on this issue but I would probably keep the alloys and just get new tyres.

I run 16X8 Kings steelies with 285X75X16 tyres on my GU IV based on cost and remote availability of tyres.

Don't know what the price difference is today, but when I went this way 4 years ago it was around $100 a tyre cheaper, that paid for the wheels. Hit a big rock the wron way and steelies are able to be beat back into shape if required, where alloys can be damaged beyond repair.

I suppose if i buy the bus and take it to my tyre man, it might end up being a $ driven decision.

I actually like the look of the GU III 16" mags, I't would be nice to get hold of a set of them, some how I don't think to many people would be swaping

    Cheers

You will get more sizes in a 16 then a 17" as well. I'm probably will have to go down to 16's as the tyre I want don't come in 33's

What's the best way to spruce up a set of 16" steel rims? Can you powdercoat them?

I own a GU with 17" and just rebooted it with BFG's A/t's and paid the same amount as 16's due to the fact I bought 5 of them... Fully balanced & wheel alignment and couldn't be happier with them
