I am he, fear me
You can use shackles if you want. Hooks are considered more versatile is all. As a point of interest, check out the rating on the hook, or the clevis pin for that matter, you'll be suprised at that as well.
Dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish.

A bow shackle can also be a bitch to undo if it is put to its limits as well unlike a hook

This should not actually be a problem if used correctly? No disrespect intended.
When using a rated shackle you should do up the pin then undo a good 1/4 to 1/2 turn to avoid stress fusion and lockup of the pin after being loaded up in a recovery.

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.
WARNING: Towballs used for recoveries can, and do kill people and damage property.
