    winch question ??

    ok i just got my first winch got a deal on an almost complete winch $0 dollars just had to buy a new rope / cable and hook , my question is why is a hook used , why are we not using rated bow shackles , i know it may be a dumb question maybe has something to do with safety? but i am new to winchs thought it was a good question

    You can use shackles if you want. Hooks are considered more versatile is all. As a point of interest, check out the rating on the hook, or the clevis pin for that matter, you'll be suprised at that as well.

    A bow shackle can also be a bitch to undo if it is put to its limits as well unlike a hook

    This should not actually be a problem if used correctly? No disrespect intended.

    When using a rated shackle you should do up the pin then undo a good 1/4 to 1/2 turn to avoid stress fusion and lockup of the pin after being loaded up in a recovery.
