I've had 2" OME in both my patrols. Current set have 85,000kms on them and still going strong. They are a bit stiff when the wagon is empty, but smooth right out with a bit of load.

I pretty much go by the book, although do filters with every oil change.
Pin in the receiver is the simplest safe way IMO, the recovery hitches are good if you recover a lot. For me, I try to not need recovery so am happy to use the pin on the odd occasion it's needed.
