The back of the cluster has a tiny loom that comes out and plugs back into itself by the odo. Perhaps a wire is corroded?

The black wire on this loom is the odo/trip. That's what I spliced into...

I thought about wouldn't it be too laggy with all that piping to fill as well?

Well technically you're case hardening the steel/part. Introducing carbon to the surface, also making it brittle sometimes. That's how most hammers are hardened or were.

I put a switch on my odo, cos we pay road user charges on our mileage - handy for off-roading. Funny when ya switch it on then off while on the road it goes...

Have got a y60 td42 shorty w/ 3 inch suspension lift.

As of late it has developed a bit of knocking noise under braking and when the weight shifts.
