Just an update:
I pulled out the glow plugs but my Comp tester is an old spark plug type and would not do the job, however I threaded a bit of 10mm aluminium tube and screwed that into the plug...

I didn't see any smoke. I hope to do a comp test on her today and with luck rule out the piston theory.

Thx Hodge. I will search on how to check the valve. May also explain why the primer bulb won't get hard.

I have had the batteries disconnected for recharge. About 12 hrs.

No smoke. All fine on the gauges, just lost power. No bang.
