the 5spd gearboxes in patrols can be quite notchy when cold as in it takes a bit to get it into gear but shouldn't be grinding gears like you say. Once they warm up gear shifts are smooth.
Only one way to know for sure, set it up and get your multimeter and measure at all joins/connections to see
