Daughters boyfried built a beaut rooftop slide using slide rails from Bunnings and it slides 2 off cannon panels right out the side of the vehicle, and he can brace it for windy conditions - he did a great job - am thinking about that myself.

Yes Phil installing modules underneath roof rack / mesh is a great concept . Provides unimpeded access to rack for stowage on top, provides tropical type roof shade/cooling, plenty of air circulation to back of the panel and provides protection to the module glass face in transit.
Side mount would be a good double up as awning type shelter. If slid fwd over bonnet, apart from shade effect (front glass), it could be secured/stabilized with drop struts to bull bar to provide support against effects of windage and other loads (eg: rain/snow).
We scored off Gumtree a new AMB Twin Compressor, should run the Air-Lockers on the old GQ ute no sweat [emoji106][emoji106]
