gq td42 turbo heats up when on hills or towing

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has heard of adding a water pipe from the rear of the block to the radiator or the front of the engine to cure the heating up problem when up it on a long hill or when towing.
It's a rebuilt engine with after market turbo, no intercooler , 10 lbs boost, auto.
On a long hill would get up to 3/4 on the guage without towing so not game to tow anything yet till I sort something out.
I slow down because I think it would just keep getting hotter.
I took the 3 row radiator out and put a new addrad 2 row in with some holes drilled in the thermostat ,and it sits around 1/4 most of the time. Problem is only hills or if I am game to tow with it.
I have read about this pipe being added and no more getting hot , also told a good quality 3 row which is specially built and a lot thicker also solves the problem. I have also heard this is quite common for these engines to get hot.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Greg it’s quite common for these motors to get hot while under load. Like the death wobbles, an overheating TD can have many causes.
Fitting an inter cooler will help your issue a lot. I assume the viscous hub is working as it should? I haven’t heard of the mod you are talking about but I have a water rail fitted on mine which is tapped into the head at each cylinder then goes into the thermostat housing. Does it help. It probably does with water flow but I doubt it helps with making the thing run cooler.
But I think an inter cooler and a professional dyno tune would be my first port of call.

Have you got a good temp gauge in it?
The factory ones aren't very acurate,it might not actually be getting very hot

Just my opinion, I think alot of over heating in the 4.2 is driving style , don't lug it , let it rev a bit, mine is stock standard GU tdi 4.2 , factory radiator factory tune 3in exhaust with muff and a snorkel ,with a 3t van on toowoomba range i find 2nd gear and about 2800 rpm doing about 40kph she will pull all day with no issues , let the revs drop below around 2300 , and temps will rise .

I can baby mine, or let it rev a bit and it makes zero difference. In my case, I just think mine needs a good run on the rollers.

Ditto to this.
Mines exactly the same . If you let the motor below certain revs and have it labouring , she will start putting on the kettle clothes.
Drop down a cog and raise the rev needle and she is much happier.

G’day Greg mate! As others have all kindly mentioned above, same same experiences on quite a few great TD42T’s only we’ve had. I’ll never trust a Nissan water temp guage again and rely on aftermarket there always. Best tactical product ever I believe was somewhat recently having installed a Redarc 3in1 gauge in the family TD42T wagon. Audible alarm scares Mrs MB into backing off the diesel hill hauling pedal at 550C Exhaust Gas Temps, boost visual to a max 12psi and 105C water is her ring in a complaint to discuss :-)
