5V Voltage Modifier MAF MAP TPS

G'day all,

I have been busy this year researching a replacement to the Jaycar Voltage Modifier Kit, in the form of a kit, or better yet, already made.

I have found several options that look all fancy in the $500-$600 region that can set a map based on rpm pulse input to set only 16 load sites across the rpm range.
An overpriced package that doesn't do the job for what we need it for (MAF and MAP Sensors).

I've put together a kit, over the last few months, finding out what fits together, and what doesn't, unfortunately by trial and error and at time and cost to me, paying retail for parts, usually have to buy 2 or 10 when I only want 1! I anticipate this cost me in the order of around $250, and paying for postage on items that aren't available in store. I'm now all over tech sheets and have a good understanding of PCB's and components from 20-30 hours of research.

The kit I have put together has 256 fully programmable levels, called load sites. When tuning the unit, you set your highest voltage and lowest voltage into the circuit, and then this spread is used to calculate your load sites.

Depending on the custom configuration needed by the application, by modifying electrical components, the circuit can be tuned to spread the 256 load sites between ±5V or as low as ±0.5V. I think for our MAF Sensor, we'll be needing a resolution of around 4V, and there's a setup that's tailored for that application.

Each of the 256 load sites can be adjusted by 255 points, being -127,0,+127. These numbers alter the output at each load site, and are worked out by dividing the designed circuit voltage spread by 255. For example ±5V has a 10V voltage spread. Spread that out over 255 output adjustment points, is 10 divided by 255, which is 0.039V, or 39mV.

There's 9 different custom configurations for the circuit to allow for the finest possible resolution for the application. Suitable applications to modify 5V sensor circuits include, MAF, MAP, TPS, Accelerometer for TCS, oxygen sensors, correcting discrepancies between boost gauge and MAP ECU boost readings, and so on.

I'm trying to gauge interest in the kit, as to whether or not I just keep the 2 kits I have made, or if I put a limited run of 50 kits together to onsell if I can see there's enough interest.
I'm also interested in assembling, commissioning and tuning the PCB so it's set up and ready to be programmed, but not programming the 255 points on the 256 load sites as this is specific to your vehicle and application.

Looking at approximately $200 for the full kit, fully supplied with all components, detailed instructions, waterproof plastic case. Just calculating putting in 3m of wire (4 wires), a 1A inline fuse, and probably a fuse jumper for ignition power that doesn't jump on cranking.

Kit assembly is around 7 hours for over 100 components, and you will need;
- Good quality digital soldering iron for sensitive electrical components
- Laboratory power supply for commissioning and tuning
- Digital Multimeter
- Good understanding of assembling components in the correct orientation
- Hand tools and power tools
- 3rd hand, tweezers, high quality side cutters

I will assemble for an additional $200, which includes testing components prior to installation, customising the circuit for your application, commissioning and tuning.

I'm not on here to sell, but I seen a gap in the market with no reasonable solution and want to provide people with a very cost effective solution to the problem.

I would think it's reasonable to be able to post overseas too.

I have attached a photo of my first franken-build that's ready to go into the ZD30 CRD. To be installed inside the cab. Once it's tuned, it's set and forget so it can be secured away under the dash in a fully sealed case.

Due to having to keep cost per unit low, I have to buy in bulk, so I will be putting together 50 kits. This is going to cost me thousands to do, so I won't be pulling the trigger until I get some interest in it.

What R&D has been put into this? I think there needs to be more input and feed back before ppl commit. I would be happy to give it a go but would want a guarantee on my engine and you obviously know how to tune it so would need that too as no one else knows your product. I would be happy to pay the money to have my truck tuned by a person that does a full tune. However if this works, I would give it a go for R&D purposes if it doesn't blow my motor. Tell us more of what this creates in performance and reliability.

Thanks for taking the time to have a read.

Just to clarify, I'm not in sales. I'm a final trim grader operator in the Gas fields, and I'm interested in knocking together some kits to help out (mostly) Patrol owners, from dreaded boost limp from upgrading our wheezy 3L into a fire breather.

This is exactly the same principal as the old 2 piece kit you used to be able pick up at Jaycar. The Kit, and the separate hand controller. That kit was introduced in 2009, and the parts were readily stocked at most Jaycar's. Then they stopped making the kits and the hand controllers.
There has been fully made up product replacements, for $450-550 that have unfortunately been and gone on the market, otherwise I would have bought one.

The same electrical Engineer that designed the 2009 kit, designed this kit too, but it isn't available as a kit, and the parts aren't available in Jaycar or Altronics. It's a full assembly job, ordering piece by piece, looking through spec sheets of 100's of products, comparing stock availability, pricing and bulk discounts over 5 suppliers. 10 kits gets a good discount, but the real cost benefit for all is for 50 kits at a time.

The 2009 kit was discontinued around 2015, and there was nothing to replace it. This kit superseded the 2009 kit, because it's much simpler to build, and does not require a separate hand controller. In addition, the specialised chip count has been reduced from 8 to 2, reducing significant costs, and all controls and the LCD panel are on a single PCB as shown in the photo.

Setting up of the unit is exactly the same as the old kit. It is technical, requires a calculator, and tailored for the custom setup, but once you get your head around it, it's fairly basic.

By default, the unit does not alter the voltage. Say you're going into limp when under load, boosting away from the lights, your ECU is getting too high a reading from your MAF sensor. If it's out of the pre-set tables (map) of the ECU and it cuts your fuel down to prevent engine damage. Your ECU doesn't know you're running a 3 inch exhaust, snorkel, high flow intercooler, K&N airfilter, Tillex/ Dawes kit, EGR Blocked off, all allowing more airflow and less backpressure, so it sees that something is wrong.

By modifying the MAF voltage the ECU sees, the ECU doesn't throw a hissy fit. It doesn't throw out your Air:Fuel Ratios, as the ECU gets this from your O2 Sensors.
By observing what's happening with a Digital Multimeter, to see where the problem lies, you can calculate what you need modify the voltage to, to what the ECU wants to see.

It's a good idea to have gauges, as a Patrol Owner, and especially if any vehicle modifications have been done. This will help you to keep an eye on what's going on, and to keep an eye on EGT's just in case tuning goes too far back the other way and runs the engine too lean, but that will be way off the tune anyways.

Once the points have been set, the lid can be put on and tucked away securely under the dash.

As with any mods, there's a risk in doing them, however these kits have been tried and tested for many many many years with great results.

There's a video up on Youtube done by Geeyoutoo titled "Nissan 3L, JayCar Voltage Interceptor Adjustment & Tips". Good watch to see what the 2009 unit does. The setup is exactly the same.

If any 4x4 crawler is interested in modifying their Throttle Position Sensor to make it silky smooth with a lot of control (extra travel) for lower revs, ramping up to full throttle at full throttle, this kit is good for that too.
This is done by modifying the voltage to lower, for the low revs and slowly increasing them, and then ramping the voltage curve up to full throttle.

Getting a little bit of interest from these kits from around the place, which is good!

I have put together a kit, the next in line from the very popular one that was available at Jaycar up until 2015 when it was discontinued. The same guy that designed the old kit, designed this new and improved model, however, it didn't make it onto Jaycar shelves. Possibly for liability reasons. Not too sure.

This kit has been a few months in the making, with countless hours going through tech sheets, comparing prices among wholesalers, getting the last of the remaining stocks in the world to get the build price down to pass the savings on. Can't just walk into Jaycar to get this kit together, they don't carry much variety of stock, and they sell most components with 30-400% mark-up.
