Leak between transfer case and rear tail shaft

So I popped into the workshop and they're about to do the clutch. When he pulled the rear tail shaft off there was a pool of oil sitting between the tail shaft and the transfer case... Oil level in the t/case is fine. Once he separates the gearbox and the t/case he will have a look but he has never seen this on the t/case side of tailshaft... Can clearly see where it's been sitting in the round cavity of tailshaft ...
Thought I'd ask, is there a seal that could have gone? Maybe behind that nut somewhere in the photo on the t/case ??

If the seal had gone it will be in the handbrake drum as well. Get them to pull it off and have a look.

Thanks Mat. I've talked to them he will have a look. Is it a big job replacing the seal if it is stuffed ? (Which it obviously will be since it cant't be anything else ).

No shouldnt be to much trouble to change it. especially having the case out of the car.

Cheers. He will have it on the desk, as he split it from the gearbox to make it easier dropping the box out to gain clutch access.

Would be a great time to drop in some reduction gears if that was in the "to do box"

Don't think it it the seal. The seal is on the outside of the drive flange. This is the inside of the flange. This is coming from between the output shaft and the flange ( along the splines). Check if output nut is loose or end play in output shaft or worn splines. Otherwise if that was all the oil that has gotten into there since it was last apart I don't think it is too much drams.

On the card but not this time around ... Cars been there for days getting a lot of work done so , couldn't have asked for more as the wallet will cop it good and proper as it is lol.

Nut was very tight. And the oil that was there was probably an accumulation over a long time ... Oil level was good and according to cars history and during my ownership last oil change was at 40k. Car now has 105,000 on clock.

I wonder why a newer model like this would develop a gearbox seal failure in the rear.
