Well what a weekend. Originally I had planned on heading down Friday arvo but ended up working until 6 that night. So I left early Saturday morning arriving at Pauls around 10 am. Paul and the others were already in the shed having started working on Steve's car.
So I jump in and start helping. We were going to fit Steve's pyro/boost/temp gauge and a quick tune. Steve invested in a Glowshift 3 in 1 gauge. I was very impressed with this gauge and its inputs, the pyro side is very responsive as is the temp gauge, the boost part is easily readable and is also quite responsive for an electronic gauge. It is a very good unit so hopefully it stands the test of time.
After getting all the gauges fitted we then moved onto the tuning side of things. However Steves aftermarket immobiliser had other ideas, after a little tinkering and working out how to put the code in correctly we had it running again. So ab adjustment here and adjustment there and we were happy with the outcome.
In amongst all this I got stuck into pauls car again. The symptoms explained to me, and a quick test drive found that it felt like an air restriction. So the diagnostics began, the results are interesting, I found that the last fix we did was now restricting the larger turbo paul has just fitted. While the setup was good for his older turbo the air demands of the new one far exceed it and a already compromised intake wasn't helping. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to finish this off.
Onto Saturday night, the beers were flowing and the yarns a spinning. We were all fed like kings and what a feast followed by a selection of desserts unrivalled :). It was then back to the beers and yarn spinning then off to bed excited about the next days plans.
Sunday arrives and to think the weather couldn't get any better, mother nature turned it on for us, all I can say is it was already a good day without what followed. So up kinda early and unfortunately no fruit loops so I had to settle for bacon, eggs and toast. Vehicle checks were done, gear loaded and off we headed to our meet up point. We were to meet up with everyone from the day before plus another. The extra person was Kev Smith, who was to be our guide for the day, a quietly spoken genuine bloke.
The road we hit heading towards the hills of coffs. The first track we hit (rover trail I believe) is a nice start to the day. The hills just seem to keep climbing and just when you think your at the top you round a corner to only keep climbing. We popped out at some bitumen and Kev took us up to the skywalk lookout. All I can say is WOW! Breath taking views with the beautiful weather made for a spectacular spot. We headed off from the lookout to another small spot that only a local with Kevs knowledge know about, it was to a small running creek which we walked a short way up stream, to find the rather large tree pictured in previous posts.
We moved on from there with Commando in our sites. Once at the base of the climb we all jump out to have a look at the harder of the 2 tracks (see video). While it isn't unlike anything else I have driven I was 4 hrs from home and was a little concerned about possible breakages, however the excitement got the better and I had to drive it :D. It was quite a good track which has me looking forward to the next time Im down that way.
We then finished off the day with lunch, Rocky track (yes there is one there too) and Morbid trail.
It was a ripper weekend which was made even better by the company. If anyone is ever around the coffs coast area I highly recommend getting in contact with Kev Smith or getting a hold of some of his literature. All in all I cant wait for the next trip down south :).
P.S. Paul no one has said anything about the eye lashes yet :p. For anyone a little confused I was driving my girlfriends (Sharee) GQ ute.
What a fantastic trip. A better bunch of people you couldn't meet. Paul and Ally were fantastic hosts for the whole event, they now have some sanity back in their busy lives. You would be doing it hard to find a better couple.
The Sunday trip was far better than Landcruiser Park in my opinion!
Coffs Harbour is the place to be........it leaves Queensland for dead!
A great applause out to Kev for sharing his time and secrets spots with us.
Many thanks to everyone and great pics Eric.
Mat is the number 1 mechanic.
Steve you were there first and deserve the mechanics time :)
Paul, many thanks to you again.
So guys, I must beg the question, When are you all coming down again? :D
Mat there are plenty more tracks that will keep you entertained, Broken comes to mind 1st, and if your insane enough you could have a crack at Widow maker!
Cheers,
Eric.
