Tow ball thread size

Hi, my first question. Bought a Safari and it has a 1 7/8" tow ball and my trailer is 50mm. I bought a towball but when I got it home I see the threaded shaft is too big for the hole on the Safari towbar. The new one is 1" and rated at 3500kg while I think the existing is rated at 2000 or 2500kg. Can I safely drill out the hole which I think will be 3/4" and fit the bigger size or do I need to swap the towball I just bought for the lower rated one. I do plan to tow a 2.5 ton digger on a trailer soon.

Are you able to put up a pic to explain a bit better, or do you just want to drill the tongue to fit new towball???
Never hurts to have over rated equipment, IMO But can't see you having any problems if just re drilling tongue to suit new ball.
Are they both the same width ???

All new tow set ups are 50mm the old days had 1-7/8 and 2" ball

Hi thanks for your reply. Yes I was thinking of drilling the tongue out to fit the 1" shaft. I just found the brand of towbar on the net. Its a Lock-on and says it's rated for 3500kg braked so it would seem to be a safe option. I'll email them too.

As long as its 75mm wide and 25mm of steel around the hole you should be fine, The ref to 80kg will be ball weight
