Water pump cavitation
Replaced the water pump today and on removing the old pump got quite a shock.

Old pump

I just cleaned up the face of the block and put the new pump on. I believe it's caused by low coolant level. Hunting down the reason now.

Air is highly erosive, and is also an insulator, and you are getting poor kgs of water/rev as part of it is air. Air increases frictional flow within a piping system, hence why so much attention is given to 'burping' the coolant system. Air is compressible, so you can see how ineffective a pump will be if it is half full of liquid and half full of air compared with 100% full of water. Pumps are flow rated at 100% full, not partially full of air. This is minor damage compared to some pumps I have removed from service in poorly designed pumping circuits.
