Tyre flat spots
Has anyone experienced tyre flat spots, sometimes after only a day or two of being parked?
The Patrol sits parked in one spot for a whole week, every 6 weeks. And for a while I've experience that flat spot effect after the initial drive and/or the tyre warms up.
But last several months, I've began noticing it sometimes after it's parked overnight... Driving off, I notice that small "thump" every wheel rotation... I can't pin point which tyre it is.
I've never locked the wheels up, so i doubt it's flattened out in a spot from braking. Apart from possibly pressures being a factor, what can contribute to this? Age of tyre, getting softer, harder?
6 year old Mickey Thompson ATZ P3's. 33". Done 60,000-ish...

Yep, Hodge. But my Old Trol sits for many days at a time. It usually disappears after a minute or two up to about 60. After that the death wobble took over. Hopefully with the new steering damper, it might not be as noticeable.

It could be a mixture of old harder rubber with maybe not enough pressure for the weight. You could try increasing to more than normal pressure before parking and air down when you use the car again.
Personally, I don’t keep tyres past 5 years.

I'll give more PSI a go see what happens ...
I run 32-34 around town. Might boost it to 40 and see how I go.
I have a new set on order . Waiting for arrival with no ETA at the moment ...
But there is definitely a flat spot developing even after parking it overnight.
Could be the pressures . Not sure.

Far from a tyre expert me Hodgey Mate (disclaimer:-) but those pressures do sound a whisker low Brother.
BFG & Nitto’s of late in the 33” range too I’ve been running at around 35psi fronts and 40psi rears especially on the load utes.
GU’s are exceptionally heavy as you’ve got and we all know it’s nearly impossible to keep a great wagon under GVM glovebox sticker recommendations [emoji51]
A simple idea could be?
Jack your beast up, paint some water based white on the treads, allow to dry, then do some quick test runs to see if the outer edges wear first (under inflated) and or the inner tread wears (over inflated) maybe?

mine sits for 2wks at a time, the flat spots are definitely noticeable during my first few laps around the block...

Since I posted this up, I've been messing with the pressures. And they DO make a huge difference. It's obvious the lower the pressures (softer tyre) the easier/quicker the footprint/flatspot will occur.
I've been running higher pressures than usual on the road too, and the wobbles I sometimes get at 80-90km/h have moved up to near 100kmh-ish, or almost gone.
Also, I "think" the ageing of the tyre makes it more prone to a flatspot, even overnight like mine for example. But I do believe it is only "one" tyre thats a defect not all. So, who knows...
Anyway, a new set coming up soon.

Seems strange that I foolishly left my beloved bigger KM2’s on the Shed Queen GU Chev for many years in the same spot, a quick squirt up the road every 3-6 months to reminisce [emoji23]
Chucked those old faithful bigger KM2’s on the GQ ute after guard work and ran perfect round instantly.
The only other Bloke I know of that complained about severe regular (first 50km iron out) flat spots was a Mickey owner whom also left his for months at a time?
As I’ve said previously (uneducated) I feel tyres are getting softer and softer memory lacking too maybe?

Yeah weird... Our forklift at work has just been changed from solid rubber to new pneumatic tyres for aided traction in our gravelled yard. Doesn't take long to create man-boob jiggling flat spots on the tyres.
Dunno how that is relevant but there you have it......
The nitto mud tyres I have on the GQ sit for months at a time at 40PSI and create no noticeable flat spots.
