Unless you plan to modify the engine a lot for more power then the EGT gauge is probably not needed. The CRD system will actually cut fuel if it detects that the engine is getting too hot or pinging....

Try removing the shims you can always put them back if it doesn't work and the wobbles will loosen up the steering more and more over time inc tie rods bushes etc. etc.
