  1. fekkin leaks through *two* steel coolant pipes, so now i'm in the throws of flushing coolant circuit and getting some metallic seal-tite from supercheap:

flushed the system before adding the sealer, found a red 'dust' suspended - don't think it was rust, because (imo) the wrong colour (deep 'bloody' purple-red, vs more of a browny ranga) - not sure what it was but i reckon it's an abrasive

don't bother trying to drain the radiator using the plug if you're like me and have no patience! i stripped the phillips head in the bung, then undid the bottom hose anyway :P

decided to stretch it all out as long as i can.. i'm planning an engine change anyway

to that end, i (to date) fixed one of the pipes with 'silicone rescue tape' that i've been carrying for the last 3 years (untested) - the other pipe is behind the injector-pump, and therefore i'm trying a chemical-fix.

  2. when stacked against the yank chevy diesel v8, the xr6t offers a lot of motoring for under 5k; like all things, looks good on paper but does it hold up in the real world where the rest of us live!? .. problems that spring to mind:
    1) how hard is it to turn a diesel fuel delivery system into a petrol
    2) how good will the petrol donk perform with an extra tonne weight, will that performance be accessible doing a 1500rpm 3k/hr crawl over shyte
    3) what about the factory inline 6's tb45/48? do these have merit against 50+ yrs of aussie engineering culminating in the teeth-whitening joy of driving a turbo-charged fg?

    >> dellow's ''Ford Falcon 6-cylinder to Nissan Patrol GQ-GU 4.2L 5-Speed' kit
    Bell Housing $750

    stay tuned visitor!
  3. more thinkin, more highway k's, still painful

i'm starting to seriously consider the 4l ford inline 6, turbocharged petrol engine - dellow want a bit over 2k for a conversion kit, and there are plenty of ba xr6t engines to be had for under 1k ..

there needs to be a healthy contingency to allow for electronics, as there is no way i want to fek around with the 'inferior command centre' as i've come to know it as (teehee - stoopid graduate engineers and marketing vunkers!), unlike our fellow forums member who did a full conversion, including computer, in recent times and who's name escapes me at this point
  4. time flies when you're havin fun!

    short
    - diff locker(s), cause i need to be able to get into more shit!
    - off-road trailer (not so much a camper, as a tough little dust-proof unit that all the extra shyte can land on)

    medium
    - more horsepower - plenty of torque... highway k's are still bloody painful and i'm seriously considering a duramax

    iced
    - a front bar with a better angle of attack - i've decided i like the factory alloy bar... but it could use a coat of paint to match the other battle-gear!

    sorted
    - rock sliders & other armour - it'd be nice to have something to use the high-lift on

gusty at first light, silent grove, w.a.
  5. decided to revisit this, since things have changed a bit since i posted, and we had some stuff brought forward for our trip...

    short
    - rock sliders & other armour - it'd be nice to have something to use the high-lift on

    medium
    - diff locker(s), cause i need to be able to get into more shit!
    - camper-trailer

    long
    - more horsepower - plenty of torque... highway k's are painful
    - powered winching capability (?) and...
    - a front bar with a better angle of attack (?)

    sorted
    - 6 new wheels, a/t tyres (make that 7!)
    - roof-top tent
    - egt sensor
    - dual-wheel carrier
    - long-range tank(s)
    - ground clearance

gusty lording it up over a beach somewhere east of legrande n/p
  6. i've little doubt in my mind now that the oiling that i experience is the same oiling that is a known issue with the nissans, and indeed all combustion engines; but i must say i am still surprised at the volume whenever i think about it.

next step is to instal a filter for the gases - eyeballing the mann+hummel provent, but there are a few interesting leads to follow before a decision is made: http://www.google.com.au/search?q=di...2BHUMMEL%22%29

  7. been a while; i rebuilt the turbo and got it all back in: http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...-turbo-rebuild

while it was out, i added two egt (type n, nicrobell) sensors that i acquired from this mob - http://www.tcdirect.net.au/ - one upstream of the turbo, and one downstream. that was a saga in itself, and one for an eventual update post to the turbo thread above; in the throws of all this, i knocked up an engine-bay step, cause i got tired of the milk crate's hazardous tendencies
  8. pulled & stripped the turbo today but it looks pretty good. it'll all go back together with new bearings, bits & seals, but i don't think it will fix the problem.

the pcv is contributing a bit of oil to the combustion chamber so need to do something there. in my 250xflow the gases get passed through a mesh & foam filter; maybe the 2.8 needs something similar?

... and a brief discussion with tony has me thinking i need to get the pump timing checked.
  9. time flies when you're having fun.

built the rack out of 30x30x2 gal steel tube - when i can be arsed i'll get some photots up

planning the rock sliders - acquired the steel, but still need a way to anchor to the chassis rail.

just back from trip to the central-west; turbo not far off from shitting itself - service done today - the oil was getting a bit toothy at 5000k so it was due, along with a few other things on the list

had noticed a bit smokey & gobbling a little bit of oil over the last few days of driving - somehow missed the haemorrhage of oil in the engine bay, tucked away under the turbo manifold, as part of the morning fluids & visual [mental note do this with a decent bloody torch!]

mate had the intercooler hoses off today to discover a decent volume of oil in the output port on the turbo, and in the hoses leading up to the intercooler. fark. well, logged in to do a bit of turbo research & decided to update the log while i was at it
