What was that lightweight stone guard - on chassis under the front passenger's seat?

Lying on the ground under the front passenger's door under the 2006 GU wagon, and looking at the chassis, one might see where there was once a lightweight stone guard of some sort.

As you may see from the image, my is all but gone - totally rusted out. Only the front lip remains.

What was its purpose?

[Protect wiring harness/loom?]

Hi Mate...
I would be more worried about hitting the chassis and everything else with lanolin, You do a lot of beach runs in that patrol ?
I have included a photo of what is on mine in that spot...looks like wiring harness come through it.
