Hi everybody,

Won't bore you with the full details, but in a nutshell my GQ Petrol/Gas Wagonhas been having electrical problems that culmulated with it being abandoned for a few days with no power and the driver's window open till I could get an auto electrician to find a blown fuse that I missed while looking in the pouring rain we've had up here.

Since then, cutting out and not starting. Checked all leads, WD everywhere - sometimes starts, sometimes doesn't. Same with cut outs while driving.
Pretty sure I've narrowed it down to a relay now, but don't know exactly where it is.

If I turn the ignition (not cranking) the 'check engine' light either comes on or doesn't. If it does come on it fires straight up (which is a plus as before I checked on all the wiring it didn't!) otherwise no joy.
Completely random as to what happens - sometimes the light comes on straight up, sometimes it comes up after a delay and other times nothing. When I get the pause type action I hear a faint click somewhere by the main fuse box or just under the hood - can't figure.
I'm guessing something has got well damp/wet with the window being open and I need to dry out or replace the relay, but I don't know exactly where to look.

Thanks, Tim.

Beside the fuse box inside the vehicle there are 3 relays.

The bottom one is an ignition relay, this maybe your problem.

As a test you can swap it with the top relay (It runs the interior fan motor).

Make sure the base the relay pushes into has not start to melt as well.

Check the fusible link. There are three mounted on the rear end of the battery tray if old they can give a few probs.
one is for engine but cant remember which colour it is

Sounds like an earth issue, but tony's normally on the dot.

Have a look at this thread; http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?7075-GQ-intermittant-power-supply-fuse-box-problems&p=161712#post161712

it may be some help.

Hi, thanks very much for the replies.

So far I have tried:
- swapping the relays beside the fuse box
- swapping the 2 green relays beside the battery
- checking in-line fuses from battery
- condition of fuse box is good. No signs of moisture. I've swabbed some isopropyl alcohol around the back and put the hairdryer on it for a few mins. No sign of loose connections

Don't know where to begin for an earth issue...

There is however, a pattern to it all...

1. If the 'check engine' light comes on, it allways fires first time and the light goes off (so no need to crank it each time)

2. When I turn the ignition off, I hear a click after about 5 seconds which comes from the rearmost of the 2 green relays by the battery (which is why I swapped those two around)

3. If I turn ignition on before this clicks in, the check light comes on

4. If I turn the ignition on after this clicks the check light doesn't come on.

5. When (4) happens, I have to turn the ignition off and leave it for up to a minute or so, then the check light will either come straight on or sometimes there is a pause of up to 5 secs before it comes on. Any longer than 5 secs means its not going to come on, so I switch off and wait a while...

Hope this narrows it down a bit.
Should I post this in the electrical section as well as GQ?

Thanks, Tim.

Hello again,

Had a lovely hot and sunny day up here yesterday - seems that this problen was related to damp somewhere as everything is working OK now! A bit annoying in a way...
As well as leaving the drivers window open for a few days torrential rain, had been getting a good leak on the passenger side - the floor was sodden.

Running on gas - time for a new thread to get it going on petrol again...

Hi Evil Twin,

Yeh, I realise that now. Guess this was the source of the gremlins...

Thanks, Tim
