My mate and I were just talking about this very senario on the weekend. The Endeavour Rally has out lawed towballs for recovery and prewfers no "D" shacles either. Instead insisting on Hayman Reece style receivers with pin in, to allow Snatch strap eye to fit in and pin positioned through that.

That crew were very lucky to be alive!

Yep, "D" Shackles are another no no, they must be rated "Bow" shackles.
