Day 4 - Waiting for parts

Today was pretty much an uneventful day, was waiting on an email back from Wholesale Automatic 2 see if he had some parts that we needed. We got a hold of him after lunch and he said he had the parts but he needed 2 pull them out of a gearbox that he has there.

Went shopping for a Tap, tapered grub screw, and puller.

Could not source the puller we wanted so are getting one made up from a metal fabricator down the road from my old mans.

Day 5 - Valve Body Strip Down

Still waiting on parts, but at least now I know Wholesale Auto has them all, won't turn up till Monday......was kinda hoping that we would have the box out, rebuilt and back in this week while I was on holidays, not going 2 happen, will have 2 wait till next weekend now :(

Used the time to strip the valve body down today and clean it up, so many parts in such a relatively small valve body *L*

Spent most of the day fart arsin around with the valve body, putting it back together, unfortunately we never measured the springs when we took them out and the spring dimensions we have do not match the manuals spec sheet *L* had a good guess, will soon find out it we were right or not *LMAO*

Below - The spec sheet........mmmmmmm dimension does not match my springs, oh well........... lets put this spring here anyway!

Been dreaming about this Wholesale AT stuff..is that J6 TC the upgraded version of GQ TC?

Think it is just the standard TC for the GQ, My old man ordered it.

Was going to upgrade the valve body to an extreme valve body, but could not justify / afford 2 spend the extra 1000 bucks it was going 2 cost for the upgrade.

Mate..I'm going to order that XT valve body from the W.A.T tomorrow. Will give them a call for the Super Low Stall TC price, see if missus allow me to have that one too..LOL. All these stuff should end my hunting season this year for the beasty I suppose. Account closed..haha

Lock up.... check.....
Reverse.... check.....

How many bits and pieces left over........ummmmmmmm.........does it really matter *L*

Well after having the 4b off the road just over a month now, it finally made its journey back home today without any problems.

Still need 2 put the trim and centre console back in, after working on it till about 8pm Sunday night I had had enough.

Have a heap more photo's to upload and need to add some text, but at last I can say this thread is done and dusted for me :)

I hope you all enjoyed my journey as much as I didn't, not sure if the money I saved in doing it myself was really worth it, but at least I gave it a go.

And a big thank you goes to my old man, without his knowledge and tools and the fact that he did most of the work my 4b would be still sitting in the driveway in a billion bits....... never 2 go back in again *L*

Thanks Todd for the very informative thread. I have recently been told that we need to upgrade our automatic gearbox and it will cost $3,800. So you can imagine I am a bit concerned and thought I should get a second opinion. Your photos have helped to reinforce that I don't think I want my Tony stuck in his shed for ages fixing the gearbox, while our mates are out there getting dirty, and camping. cheers rellbell

Thanks mate, reminds me I need 2 update this thread.

Is that price for a workshop 2 do it????? If I had 2 ever do it again, I would just but an exchange box and save some $$$ should only take a weekend 2 rip one out and put one back in.....but then again if I didn't care about $$$ I would get someone else 2 do it *L*

Yes that is the price for the workshop 2 do it. I hadn't considered an exchange gearbox, that's a great idea.

Don't get me wrong about money, like I tell Tony there is no money, so there is no problems, but on the same token, I would prefer that my car isn't off the road for too long, and my husband not under too much pressure/stress. cheers rellbell

No recommendation mate, a company I worked for once upon a time has a cash sale account with them, thought I would try them out. My old man is an ex diesel mechanic and also owns a Patrol with same gearbox, I asked him about it and he said it would be ok 2 use..... he is also now running it as well.

Thanks for the link mate , JESUS CHRIST WHAT JOB ! I'm not sure I could pull it out, rebuild it and reinstall it in a week which is what I would want so maybe the exchange option might be better. I'll talk to automatic transmission wholesalers tomorrow & get more of an idea, I rang them Saturday morning but they weren't open bugger it all.
