It's silly question time folks!

This has been bugging me for a bit and i sheepishly asked a fellow patrol nut this question and he also didnt know, so now I feel confident in asking without being mocked. hehe. A GU Patrol is a Y61 and a GQ is a Y60 yes?

Ok, why are there two names. Where did the name Y60 and Y61 come from? Is it just another overseas name like a GR, etc???

No mocking here Danny unless done in jest so always feel free to ask anything, anything at all. We don't consider any question silly or stupid & mate if you don't ask? How will you ever find out?

The answer to your question is:

*Y60,Y61 is the series

*GQ,GU is the Model

Cheers
Paul

If you look at the VIN (vehicle identification number) on a Patrol you'll see Y60 or Y61 depending on what model you have.
Why do we call them GQ and GU, because Aussies are lazy and will shorten any name. Y60 and Y61 have 3 characters, so we found a way to shorten it to only 2!!! That's my theory any way.

Hope this helps!

Tony

OK so this is what NISSAN told me. KR is the true model from manufacture KR then 160 is the series. But we in OZ designated MQ etc. But the interesting fact is that officially in Transport Depts and RACQ etc MK doesn't exsist

Weird eh? It's a mystery to the vast majority of us how the auto or road industry organisations really keep track of vehicle information.

What about us being able to keep up with the Roads & Vehicle authorities.... Thats a better trick if you ask me.....lol

Hmmm, maybe it's a National thing. Like GU in Aus/NZ but something else in the Gulf.

Nissan called mine (GU7) a KA when I went through ordering it

Aren't GUs called GRs in Europe?

Have a look at this link for some explanation to series and model designations.

Like others have said, different countries do it differently.
I work for Holden, we called the 1998-2005 Astra a 'TS Astra', in Europe they called it 'Astra-G'.
I don't think there's any sensible reason.
