Hello Guys,

My y62 patrol randomly makes a big fan whoooaing noise from the engine area, it almost sounds like a state bus engine. I took it to Nissan as ive only had it for 1 month and they said its a large fan belt. Its normal...

Can anyone share there thoughts on this?

Thankyou all for any help

Large fan belt. Lol.

More than likely the viscous hub locking up and kicking the fan in. They do make some noise when the hub locks up. I wouldn't be concerned.

Yeah I'd say the viscous fan kicked in as part of the cooling system. During what kind of driving has this happened mate? How many kms on the car? Although normal I have not heard my fan kick in yet.

Gday Mudrunner,

My y62 has 28000km, and im worried about the "its probably normal" from the nissan clerk at the desk comment lol, no noises for over a month then out off the blue this happens, most occurances at the speed off 60-70km/hr. Im taking it to Nissan next week AGAIN but i will bring up the viscous fan. But thankyou also for advice too

Where do you live mate? What was the outside temp?

Hey Avo did you have your fan come in much in WA?

So the viscous hub works on a temperature sensitive coil, as the water temp rises the fan kicks in and licks the front fan which helps cool the system. This is very normal but still a little odd I'd have thought. Next time it comes on check your water temp guage

The Y62 fan is electrically engaged. It does a check on start up which is normally about 5-10 seconds. Then it will only engage when the ecu reaches its set point to switch it on. It will have other parameters which will switch it like the a/c and trans temp. I believe there has also been cases of the fan clutch failing so this could also be the problem.

Gday fellas, Thankyou all for the feedback. So now ive been to 2 Nissan dealerships and they all say the same thing which is 'no fault found', even after showing them videos off the noise. I wonder if they actually do anything whilst im gone for the day and am leaving it with them...im so over it..

I then took it to an independent Mechanic who specialises in 4wd's near the area and went with him on a test drive to show him the noise myself...please note...(it takes about 10-20 mins off 40km/h to 60 km/h off drving speed to unleash the ghost(whailing) state bus sound within the car lol.

The mechanic was great! and said it was possibly a trans issue...so im taking it back to nissan for the 3rd time to show them his letter and then its off to the court rooms if i cant get it fixed lol

So forced the dealership with mb video evidence off the sound, then they kept the car for a few hours, took it for a drive with the mechanic but there was no sound lol, but in the end they had to try. Final prognosis it that they think its a radiator fan belt issue and promised it to be fixed in 2-3 weeks because off the order and part sent from Japan. Anyways thats it for now

Hi Mate, how did you get on with this noise?

my new S5 is doing it a lot, the S4 only did it very very occasionally, wasn't really an issue so wasn't concerned. The S5 does it so much I think it's an issue.

After my S4 transmission totally stuffed out at 100k (under warranty just) and it took them 4 months to replace a new trans... i'm very keen to ensure if it's trans related, the S5 gets looked at.

Can you shed any light on what your noise was diagnosed as?

cheers

Had the car in for 30k service last week.

apparently the viscous fan over engaging is a known issue in the Series 5. It's going back for a new fan tomorrow.
