View Full Version : Custom GU Rear Draws (With Interior Lights)

big_fletch
3rd August 2011, 10:22 PM
Okay Fellow Patrol Owners,
i have wanted to make a rear set of draw's for my GU for a while. I reckon i could make a set for about $500 (as opposed to the $2000 odd to buy a set).. I will be posting pics throughout the build and hoping to have them complete by the weekend..
I will be making them out of 12mm Ply, fully carpeted with Roller bearing draw slides. I will also be hoping to add an interior LED light to each draw so when opened at night i can see into the full length of the draw.

I have taken a few pointers from Rohan (Plassy's) set of draw's after having a good look over his home built set at last meetup (Thanks Buddy) lol:smiley_thumbs_up:.
If anyone has been looking at building draw's for their troll, stay tuned!

Good stuff mate! And of course it wouldn't be a Fletch job without a lighting system installed!!! LOL!

Looking forward to seeing your build.

Haha thanks mate, I haven't really seen a set of draws with lights in them.. I will be using car door switches so as soon as draws are opened the light turns on.. Have almost finished cutting up ply, ready for assembly tommorrow

Have almost finished cutting up ply, ready for assembly tommorrowHi Fletch. I built mine from plywood too, and used a set of computer sliding shelf slides that I had around the place. I am looking at fitting lights to mine as well, but I am going to use a magnet and reed switch as it can be recessed into the drawer so won't catch on the contents. I made my drawers a bit high, and keep thinking I'll cut themdown, but they are ok for now.

Hey Fletch,

I don't know, you reckon first time using a circular saw, those cuts seem pretty straight.

Have you been foxing, cabinet maker in a past life. It's looking good, please keep the photos coming, draws probably wouldn't work in the ute, but I love seeing what people are capable of.

Yep I will doing a centre console down center from rearview mirror to about the center roof light.. Thinking a slimline one at this stage but see what happens when the build starts.. I'll put uhf in roof but the hand piece will be down near radio with a map pocket in the middle of the roof console.. But will go into design and ideas when build starts.. Hey Fletch,

Top job mate, no excuses now that you don't have enough light for your projects.

Next project, let me see(gazes into crystal ball), wont be happy to just have drawers, the neat freak in you will want compartments in those drawers so there is a place for everything and everything in it's place.

Mark

Thanks for the Kind words mate,
Haha already thought of that mate, compartments would be really handy lol.. Once i finish modifying the cargo barrier to fit then i will worry about next project i think

Top job!

I can supply the dimensions of the draws to anyone that wants to have a go at building some though?
It would be nice to have them.

hey mate.Them drawers have come up a treat. nice work. Awesome walkthrough with the pics. I am going to attempt a set based on yours, with small modifications. ( narrower drawers to fit a dual battery on left side slot, and recovery gear right hand slot )
i have 2 questions if i can.
1) I see you have left seatbelts in. is there a reason, or can they be legally removed?
2) If you still have dimensions, any chance of sharing them? Will save a lot of headaches :P
cheers

They look great! I am about to embark on a build of my own, so I can only hope they turn out as good as yours have! Love the idea of the LED lights in the drawers on the pressure switch, so might attempt that too!

Haha well I just hope they come up ok, tonight is pretty much my first time using a circular saw.

Just a tip for you for cutting sheets straight.
You can clamp the box tube got for the runners to the sheet at the set back of the saw and run the saw along the edge of the tube to get the cut straight. Bit of setting up but a perfect cut.

Looks good and a great job also.

Great idea with the lights.

Hey Fletch just wondering if you have any pics of how you attached the drawers to the car! I know in an earlier post you said you were going to use an angle to the 3rd row seat bolts, just wondering if you had a pic. Thanks Ben

And a 40 tooth blade helps.

How have the draws stood up to time and travel mate?
