hey everyone, well instead of putting all the pics and updates of my gq in the introduction section i thought i may as well put a members ride thread. i'll copy and paste the writing from there into here now and the pics from there also. keep it all together in one place here i think will be best.

hey everyone,

New member here. And new to patrol's, well new to the 4x4 world altogether. it's a 1996 gq patrol st lwb station wagon. rd28t and just gone over 357,000km's.

bought her on the 24/06/2011. got my license back after 26 months on the 07/07/2011.

car came with uhf, kenwood cd player, winch with both wired and wireless remotes (unsure of brand), arb steel bullbar, haymen and reece heavy duty towbar (needed this for work to), dual batteries, roolite spotties, maxxis buckshot's 265/75/16's (31.6"), 2" suspension lift with efs springs and ultima 0-2" shocks, turbo timer, and tailshaft already turned around 180 degrees.

before getting my license back i fitted up a few things i had laying around from old cars, fire extinguisher, boost gauge (found out it's broken and not doing anything), alpine cd player to replace the cheap kenwood one, mounted an xr6t intercooler in the front, hopefully have the piping finished for it by next weekend, had a fair wait on the silicone joiners, bought a boost controller (will go on after i have a working boost gauge and pyro gauge, also bought a brand new tradesman roof rack for $300 and fitted that up.

after getting my license and going out and getting stuck on my diff's a few times i went out and bought some brand new black 15x8 sunnies and 35" maxxis bighorn's. had the winch stuff up while bogged on diff's, long story short ended up needing to use the cable as a snatch to get me out of there. got the winch to work again, just to have the remote solenoid get stuck on in and wind the cable in till it snapped as it happened after i had just hooked it to the point on the bullbar to touch it in, so my fairlead is fair ruined now and also needing a new cable and hopefully get away with a service of the winch instead of needing to buy a new one.

overall, very happy with the car, very clean, only managed to spot about 3 tiny little dents and that's looking very closely to find them. no rust at all, not even surface rust. interior is like new, oh i also removed the 3rd row of seats as there not needed. love how the back seats fold up in it makes it perfect for having my dog's in the back without needing a cargo barrier.

here's a few pic's.

Agreed, are they 33" tyres?

How do you find the RD28 engine?

in the rear guard they just touching on the rear, nothing to stress about though and front just pushes the plastic flare forward as it goes :)

front guard's just hit on the plastic inner flare when offroad, so have ordered some 15mm radius arm spacers to fix that issue.

tires are 35x12.5x15's

really happy with the 2.8, mate has a leaf sprung 4.2 gq tray back. and he is always saying he was struggling to have enough power to get up places that i did with ease.

also forgot to say i blocked off the egr just yesterday to. and am about to fit my manual boost controller, but not to sure if i should wind it up at all or not yet as boost gauge is not working and haven't got another one yet. also bought myself a 150L a min air compressor yesterday, after blowing up a cheap ebay one i got from trying to pump a single 31" tire, only got it 12psi and died lol.

if anyone on here is from around the albury / wodonga area, i recomend you check out bartlet automotive on nurigong st, as they have just started selling 4x4 gear and have got a lot of gear in stock now. got my 60" high lift and air compressor from them and a new winch cable on the way. they stock tigerz11 and mcc 4x4 gear. and no, i don't work there, just a happy customer trying to help a business into the 4x4 world.

Nice rig old mate ... good to see you picked it up in tip top shape and then proceeded to use it for what it's built for!!! The 35's certainly fill the arches as said!!!

Yep, those wheel arches are all filled up in that last shot...haha

Was by far the tidiest in my price range. Was at first concerned about the 2.8, but it goes alot better then I expected and will only get better from now on :)

Yeah I couldn't not use it offroad, I've got 2 uncles into 4wding also. One has a hilux that has 14" of suspension travel still on leaf springs front and rear. And the other has a couple Suzuki Sierra's, one with a rover 4.6 v8 and another with a efi 1.6 vitara motor and aftermarket ecu and 6" lift on the way with plans of 35's or 36's haha.

Yeah 35's are perfect for it really. As soon as the 15mm radius arm spacers turn up I'll have no concerns at all with them.

Well they did actually break one of the mounting points for the rear plastic flares off lol. Just the one at the rear side of the guard very bottom bracket, there is another not far up so it's all good, I was going to cut the bracket off anyways because it really was the only concern on the rear. It does only just touch the metalwork, but that's not pushing against it just rubbing really. Also with the plastic flares on it keeps the tread of the tires covered for driving on road making it legal in not sticking out of the guards at least :) 31's are on for street driving though anyways.

Got the boost controller on now. Not going to play with it though till after I got boost and pyro guage sorted. Need to get off my arse and finish hooking up the intercooler also. And hopefully not to long till I have a full turbo back 3" exhaust :)

15mm radius arm spacers turned up on Thursday. Going to fit them today if I get a break from the rain. And hopefully get the 31's back on. Work trailer sits on to much of an angle with the 35's on.

thanks for the postive words everyone :)

took the car in for a wheel alignment yesterday as it's been pulling to the left, to find out it's a camber issue and the castor is to far out also, told me $670 for the parts and fitment, but how it is now the tires will wear well and it is the best as it can get, so i'll just put up with it till a new lift gets fitted :)

Thanks for the welcomes.

So I'm wanting to put a 2" bodylift into this. Been looking at this alloy kit on eBay http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/viewitem?itemId=170668356219&index=0&nav=WATCHING&nid=38738375270 any thoughts or suggestions?

Matt

YNOT

My personal opinion, forget the body lift and go for a bigger suspension lift. Body lifts put extra strain on the body mounts and don't give you any better suspension travel or chassis clearance.

Tony

gqt
12th August 2011, 10:24 PM
Yeah I've read all the pro's and con's over and over. Still more of a half half on to do it or not. But if going through with a bodylift would the alloy ones be the best to go with? Or another type. Or is it really much of a muchness?

YNOT

I don't know what sort of body blocks are best, I had poly in my first GQ.

Tony

gqt
12th August 2011, 10:38 PM
No worries. I've just been thinking of a bit more under bonnet clearance. Bit more room around the gearbox. Better approach and depature angles. And that bit of extra sill clearance. Being new to 4wding and not wanting to lash out on suspension untill after working out what will best suit my needs. So for the 2" has been enough just and only let down by the lack of down travel from the shocks. Also planning on buying my first house before spending to much on the patrol. If I didn't spend so much on my old Vl turbo I'd probably already have a house and be able to spend more on the patrol already. Always learn the hard way lol.

Got a 2" hdp bodylift on the way now. Hopefully get some free time this weekend to get the winch all cleaned out and serviced and put the new cable on and back on the car.

Thinking the next thing I purchase might be some longer shocks. If I get a chance on the weekend I'll disconnect the shocks and jack the car up till just before the springs fall out to see the longest I can go with the current spring setup. It's 60-65mm suspension lift due to the coil spacers. So hoping 3" shocks will work well.

The gap between the body and chassis will stand out more. When I body lifted my first GQ I made rubber flaps to cover the gaps in the wheel arches, made it very difficult to tell at a quick glance that it had a body lift.

Tony

gqt
25th August 2011, 05:36 PM
Yeah. That's the way I always see if a gq has a bodylift. Look straight into the rear wheel arch at the gap. Thanks for the idea Tony :)

well i've made the big decision. it's time for a quarter chop :) after finding some scrap marks on the rear bar already, plus the 35's rubbed all the paint off on the lip at the rear bottom edge of the guard. just not sure how to finish it off... i've seen the way of pop rivets and body hardner, but apparently that's not the proper way to do it? so not sure yet. today i'll cut the hole for the cooler piping, and i'll cut the rear quarter. worry about finishing it off before going off road again, hopefully tomorrow.

ok here we go.

first i pulled of the body moulds, found out these were holding a little bit of water in them, fair bit moist underneath.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0872.jpg

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0873.jpg

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0874.jpg

gave it a clean up where i needed to put the tape.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0927.jpg

ran the tape where i wanted the cut.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0928.jpg

cut the outside to start with.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0930.jpg

accidently hit some wires lol, be sure to remove all tail lights and triple check no wires are in the way.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0929.jpg

level across to the inside and mark along in there, as i will be folding the inside up also, i only marked this with a builders pencil, and then cut the inside out.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0931.jpg

repeat for the other side.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0932.jpg

threw a little black paint on for now to prevent any rust wanting to start to form. just till i finish it of properly.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0933.jpg

and because mine's a series 2 i fitted my external rear bumper corners for my indicator's and parker's.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0937.jpg

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0935.jpg

so, what i have left to do is fold the edge's up and seal up the bottom side, then save to get the patroldocta rear bar i want :)

also hear is where my cooler is mounted, no pics of cooler piping hole yet, didn't touch the front of the car today like i had hoped.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0876.jpg

boost controller mounting point. most likely change this later.

Bodylift turned up last night :)

gqt
20th September 2011, 07:12 PM
finally fitted my 2" bodylift on the weekend. here's the only pic i took afterwards, was in a fair rush.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0992.jpg

and tonight i decided to lift my rear bar up to suit the body lift. follwed the guide from here lifting the standard rear alloy step. then proceeded to drill an extra hole in the side supports to line the bolt up like so.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0995.jpg

so that way i could bolt them to their original side like this.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/wpn_vl/gqt/IMG_0997.jpg

then the end result looks pretty well standard, except i removed the factory tow hook as it only had 2 bolts now lining up and i just fitted those 2 bolts in for a little extra support on holding the step up.

20th September 2011, 07:18 PM
wow nice job.
would you suggest for others to get body lift?
I already have 2" suspension lift.

gqt
20th September 2011, 07:27 PM
piss easy to fit. i'm yet to drive the car at all with it in yet. still gotta extend my fuel lines in the engine bay and filler hose to the tank. and work out what i'm doing with the gearshifter lol. been spending spare time getting the new bought daily running on gas.

also my patrol has a 2" suspension with 15mm coil spacers and just cleared maxxis bighorn 35's without touching the guards, to make reasonable room though i have spaced the front diff forward 15mm with radius arm spacers. and the only place that touched on the rear was the back side lowest mount for the flares. one of those got torn of 4wding lol, and the other side i cut off after i got back.

factory side steps don't need lifting because they mount to the body :) my bull bar looks funny atm though. the rear body mounts that every says are a prick, well i can tell ya now they are. i didn't drill out the captive nuts though. i just cut the heads of the bolts from the underside with the 4" grinder :)

AB
20th September 2011, 07:30 PM
Very nice mate, I'm going to be doing this soon myself.

By the sounds of it I can't wait to do the rear mounts...:bananarock:

gqt
20th September 2011, 07:37 PM
lol yeah i had a rattle gun to do my mounts, rears just kept spinning. think i spent an hour on the first rear one before grabbing the grinder lol. 2nd rear like a minute lol with the grinder. i also opened up the whole in the floor so i could get the captive nuts out.

gqt
5th October 2011, 06:30 PM
so my bullbar still is 2" to low. i'm not sure if i should get it lifted up to suit, or be better of selling it to buy a bar that suits the 2" bodylift. was looking at the xrox bars and you can buy them to suit a 2" bodylift. but i like the arb bar also. decisions, decisions lol.

So it seems my turbo has died. Car now struggles to pull the work trailer and use to do it piss easy :( now I'm stuck on what to do. Was considering going rb30et straight gas maybe. Or just replace the turbo and hope nothing else is about to follow. Also got a heap of leaks to fix.

Suggestions?

YNOT

Did you get around to fitting the boost and pyro gauges? If you did what readings are you getting?
Might just be a blocked exhaust, try dropping it before the first muffler and going for a drive.

Also, with your bullbar I have modified an ARB bar the same as that to suit a body lift. I cut off the mounts and welded on a 10 or 12mm steel plate then welded the mounts back on the other side of the plate 50mm lower.

Tony

gqt
28th October 2011, 03:52 PM
nah haven't had the spare money for them as i don't want to get cheap crap. stupid apprentice wages :(

will give that a try, it has been blowing a fair bit of smoke on boost also, noticed last night on the on ramp to the fwy it blew alot more then it ever used to, same with warming up this morning.

i think i get what you mean there, cut the mounts off the bullbar and weld the plate to the bullbar hanging low enough to weld the mounts back on 50mm lower. thanks :)

YNOT
28th October 2011, 04:54 PM
Black smoke indicates not enough air getting into the cylinders so it could still be the turbo. Check your air filter as well.

Tony

28th October 2011, 05:00 PM
It's all blue smoke

YNOT
28th October 2011, 05:48 PM
Blue smoke is oil smoke, not sounding good for the turbo. Really need boost and pyro readings to get a better idea of what's going on.

Tony

I'll see if I can borrow my uncles ones. I know that last time I had a boost gauge on there it was running 11psi. So at least I know that less then that then something is up.

Also, not sure if it's just cause this is now basically only driven with the work trailer on or when I go 4wding. But it's down to 450-500km to a tank. Not much for $120 lol.

Now I'm thinking I should of just bought a boost and pyro gauge with the money from selling my phone. But I bought rock sliders. Which I pick up on Monday, glad I have 2 cars.

So recently I've got a mount for my high lift and a padlock to stop thieves stealing the high lift.

Last night I changed the fuel filter, cleaned the air filter, put in some diesel injector cleaner and threw in some 2 stroke oil to give that a crack. Anything to try and get the km's better.

Started the car this morning. Ran rough for a bit, then started to blow smoke out the exhaust and start slowing down. So I did a u bolt to start heading back home, by the time I turned around blue smoke was everywhere and the car was struggling to move. Got about 20m before it wouldn't run at all anymore.

To add to this my falcon engine is also dead and only just started to swap the motor in it. So now stuck with no car :(

When you added the 2 stroke oil did you just pour it in the tank and put the cap back on? If you did then it probably hasn't mixed properly with the fuel, you need to add it to an empty tank then fill the tank with fuel to mix it. Also, don't use synthetic 2 stroke oils, they don't mix properly with diesel.

I filled up first then added it and and swished it around by rocking the car. And it's not synthetic, it's only cheap stuff

Yeah love the bighorn's. On the smaller side of 35's but still go well off road. There even more quiet then my 31's on road which are maxxis buckshot's.

Nice rig mate, may I ask what size tyres you have. 35" but are they 15's or 16's?

For some reason, White just looks great. I've had white cars all of my life.. and now I'm stepping into a Maroon one.

But still have a soft spot for clean White 4wd's.

Top rig and awesome pic too.

Cheers bigmav, they are 15x8 -22 I'm pretty sure was the offset. They tuck up really well.

Thanks timbo, yeah always loved white gq's. Just happy to own one now :)

ATM I'm trying to sort out why I'm hitting the 15psi overboost valve by 2800rpm - 3000rpm. I've backed the fuel down to only being up by 1/8th of a turn from how it was when i got it which I presume was factory standard. I've turned the boost controller all the way down. Still doing the same. Gotta try the other adjustments I touched to get the idle down to reasonable from when the fuel was up half a turn.

Now I have to tap the throttle to get it to start when dead cold. So next step is fuel back down to standard and see how that goes, if it's the same deal I'll play around some more till I figure it out. But the car goes so much better up to that point then it did from when I first got it. Just the overboost kills it. And I'm not blocking it off cause my turbo will overboost and spit a shaft and not sure what the motor would think of more then 15psi lol.

But how it is now is perfect for low range, it can still rev out without hitting the overboost valve when I'm in low range out bush. I'd leave it purely for that reason that it suits offroad heaps better. But it's a struggle to sit on 110, push the throttle down slightly and it'll hit 15psi and start to slow down. Sitting on 12psi at 110 with the 35's on.

Also picked a motor up the other day, the rd28 is dead with a cracked head. Just got to give it a tidy up and grab all the efi and turbo gear then she can go in the gq.
