"Grave Sites & Memorials"

We could get some interesting pics this comp, could be a roadside memorial, a historic grave or one that is of special interest. I have visited several famous memorials on my travels as would many others.

Lets get plenty of entries this time.

Remember to follow the rules shown in pink below.

Regards

Well seeing I was placed first I thought I`d better be the first to post some thing up.

As I pedal a Tryhard there are possibly a few out to get me, but don`t worry I`ve got my basses covered.

We were quite shocked at how many ‘UKNOWN’ nameless miners were buried throughout their town cemetery over the years.

Came across this grave about 6 years ago on the Nullarbor. Very lonely spot but I stood the cross back up for whoever RIP's below.

May he rest in Peace mate and i hope he enjoyed the Long Neck mate. Side note mate, the plaque says 23 December 1971? not 1970? if that is right you get to have a commemorative 50 year drink with him 2 years in a row brother! get someone to drive you and have a bloody longneck with him mate. Live Long mate, 49 is way to young!

Aboriginal burial site at Tibooburra in Corner Country. This one has been fenced and preserved as most have been lost or destroyed due to floods, erosion and stock damage.
Mulga branches were stacked allowing windblown sand to form a mound, this is a practice unique to the Corner Country.
Most senior or important person is buried at one end and is also represeneted by the size of the branches used. All graves also face the same direction.
This was a pretty solemn place and not on any tourist maps, I was given the directions by a local. Unfortunately very few traditional burial sites remain.

Probably the deepest grave I'll ever see. Minining is a tough job, this is only a couple of hundred meters from the Broken Hill Miners Memorial. The Memorial contains over 800 names and that doesn't include those that died of lead and dust poisoning and other related diseases. These guys were only 19 and 21, they probably felt they were bullet proof.

Came across this memorial about 60km south of Bedourie on the way to Birdsville.
Only 20 years old but he is recognised as Coober Pedys founder as he found the first Opal while gold prospecting. Unfortunatly drowned while droving cattle for the Kidmans.

While cycling (what else do you do in the Netherlands) near the German border I came across this well maintained War Grave. I asked around and was told he was the only casualty and the other six were taken captive. Another person who gave their life for others and taken far to early.

Well known founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Australian Inland Mission. A little know fact is that he was also a pupil at the Snake Valley Primary School, the same school my children attended.
When I first saw the memorial 35 years ago it had a very different rock on it. That rock had been taken from a sacred site at Karlu Karlu over 400 km away, since then it was returned and replaced by the current rock. He was so well respected by the local indigenous people they selected another rock to replace it.

Found this small plaque at a lookout on Namatjira Drive near the West MacDonnell Ranges
Tweated my interest so I did a bit of research, quite some controversy regarding the cause of his death. I've linked the inquest and also his wife's claims, sadly another life lost to early.

There is an amazing story behind this memorial.
When this bloke was just twenty years old he had a motorbike accident which parallelized the lower half of his body.
Did this stop him, NO . At the time he was running cattle on a property on the eastern side of the Flinders Ranges. He continued to run this property untill he passed in the year two thousand and fifteen aged sixty seven.
I had the privilege of working on his every day transport and early Landcruiser. He used this vehicle with no modification, yes it was, is a manual. He used it for shooting with gun racks and bars, and by all accounts he was not too bad a shot. I believe he started it in gear and use only the hand throttle, and hand brake. When I had a pedal in it I could not fault the c lutch , gearbox or brakes.
One remarkable man .
He is buried in the Orroroo cemetery with a headstone very similar to this one which is situated on the property where he lived.82905

When I visited the Beechworth cemetery in two thousand and eighteen I came across this memorial.

Now I know cemetery's are quiet and solemn places but I had a little chuckle.
On the gate into the cemetery which was only around fifteen meters from this memorial and the grave was a sign saying to keep the gate shut as there was a rabbit plague and the warrens were a danger to domestic pets82915
