Hey guys! Hi from another part of the world - Bulgaria (Europe) !

I'm in trouble, so I've decided to ask for help, finally...

My 2.8 GU broke a rod, which got hit by the crankshaft, which broke all the 6 flywheel bolts. I didn't send it for a check, but I think that the crankshaft will be bent, and it has marks from the rod on it, so I've decided to get another engine.

A friend of mine just got a Y60 with a mint condition rd28t, and is going to put a BMW M57 engine in it, so I've bought his engine. And now my question - how do I rewire the thing to start, and the tacho to work ? I know the GQ uses a 22J20 mech injection pump, and the GU uses a VB300 electric one. I've got myself a pedal with a cable.

i dont know anything about the 2.8s but if you check the manuals and see if you can fit the gu pump to the new engine . if it just bolts on i think this would be the best solution.

I think I'm going to try to use it with the mechanical injection pump, so I have less electronics in the long run - crankshaft position sensor, injectors, MAF sensor.

There are a few things to check on the RD28 http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?41430-RD28-Important-things-to-check

The engine is in the bay now. I'm connecting all hoses and vacuums, the main thing that is bothering me, is how to connect the tachometer, as this engine lacks crank RPM sensor. And it doesn't have a slot in the timing cover for a crank sensor.

How do people make their tachos run, when swapping engines ?

Swap the timing covers over?

TBH I didn't want to dismantle a fully working engine, so left it how it was.

What do people that swap TD42s in GU's, do ?

There are a few threads dealing with this exact issue. Try the search function. I found this thread http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?8171-rd28-to-td42-conversion-gq&highlight=rd28+td42 as a starting point.
