Before we went away to the snow a couple of weeks ago, I thought I'd remove the roof cage as we didn't need it for the trip and I figured it would just accumulate snow that would be hard to clear off the roof.

I wanted to set up something that would hold it up in the roof rafters securely, but also be easy for me to lift from, and replace back on the car by myself.

Originally I was thinking ratchet straps, but when I went to Bunnings I saw these.

They have a ratchet type locking pulley, with a little lever to release the rope. Easy to pull up and not hard to lower bit by bit from each of the four corners of the roof cage.
I closed the hooks a bit in the vice just to give a safer hold.

I put in four eye bolts near the top of each beam.
Helpful tip: the 114mm eye bolts fit perfectly into a 30mm socket ;) – just pre-drill the hole and this saves winding the eye bolts in with a lever.

I added a tie-off point for extra caution and the whole system works really well.

Overall I'm very pleased with this solution.

Look good mate. Maybe some fixed chains to secure it when it's stored incase the rope wears or weakens over time? I've always wanted to do the same thing but I can't fit in the carport.. :(

Edit: looks like you've already got a belt on it

Yes, the strap I have around it at both ends was what I had holding it in place before the hook system. I just left them there for now as a precaution.

That's great. I rigged up something similar for mine (with the rooftop tent) from the old gear I had from the kayaks.....then I realised that I can't fit the patrol in the garage with the tent on....not that it ever goes in there anyway as the Mazda is parked inside...
