grenade 2002 patrol just spent 5k on fuel pump and all the extras just wondering is it worth it to get a reco motor (zd30) and how long would this engine last

How long is a piece of string? The pump went on my ZD, I binned the motor and did a TD swap instead. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gone a Cummins. Hindsight is a great thing...

The motor has just karked it again, I will not spend another cent on that motor, currently in the process of sourcing an ls1 to do a conversion

From what I nuffy understand the new craze of the Cummins 6BT albeit a weapon of a motor causes serious overweight engineering issues on Patrols. So much so that was led to believe a bullbar alone (no winch) is enough to overdo their front ends.
Currently run a Chev 6.5NA diesel in my tractor ute as bought already converted but honestly wouldn’t recommend this as a viable option for new conversion.
Bang for buck, the Holden LS1 keeps coming up trumps in all the numbers, including initial expense & easier engineering.
Certainly more and more are heard around our high country tracks yearly although unsure if an LS1 is best for outback petrol touring needs like a TD42 old faithful clacker!

Thought best to add here roughly learnt/quoted understandings of professional drive-in/out conversion dollars for 3.0L Patrols over the years:
#LS1 $15k-‘ish’
#TD42T $20k-‘ish’
#6.5NA $30k -‘ish’
#6.5T $35k-‘ish’
#6BT & 6.6Duramax $50k-‘ish’

More than happy to be corrected and many more conversion possibilities out there but one must consider readily available adaptation kits and engineers sign off comfort needs too!

Watch this space :-)
So many much wiser men have moved their relaxation yet power on tap needs to Nissan’s global 5.6L petrol weapons!
Y62/Patrol/Armada/Titan/??? Parts readily available is surely the future only allowable co2 nearing?
The first Aussie mob to develop adapters/looms for new Nissan donks to Old will surely smash the market for a long tough old drivetrain time to come ;-)

6BT can be done for less that half of 50K MB. Unless its a full rebuild with everything new... A customer of mine just finished his GU 6BT conversion. Paid 7k for an import motor from the UK, spent another 6'ish putting it in and engineered. The motor lasted 2000k and the seller from the UK shipped a whole complete motor to him for nothing. Going strong now and god does it go!

Found a place that starts at $35k for a 5.9 common rail DIDO engineered for swap only. Any weight issues are yours.
I have been chasing up a conversion place in SE Qld, this place seems to be spot on with their work. Just getting a more formal quote.

I have a customer who did his own 6BT conversion. Cost him $16k give or take a thou. And a lot of headaches. He loves it but has said it’s no longer able to be a real 4wd. Far too front end heavy now. But as a tourer, balls to the wall. Were his words.

im in the process of sorting out a 6bt conversion , 6bt should only be about 60kg heavier that td42 , i should have mine over a weigh bridge in a few weeks , $30k is around the drive in drive out cost depending on transmission etc

Your Highmount weapon alone Mudski Mate with Steel bullbar truly needed to contain its power would add at least I nuffy guesstimate 100kg +++ atop of an OEM alloy bar [emoji123][emoji106][emoji106]

I think the Cummins 4.5 should be on this list. It is just about a drop in fit and has plenty of horses.

Yeah not sure about a 6bt I'm sure would be awesome power and insane torque but the weight is an issue. . Maybe if your just towing / touring 6bt would be mint. .

No, not the 4BT. The 4.5 ltr is a completely different common rail engine.

Yeah nice. Reckon I'd be going that over a 6bt for sure if I ever did lol. . Any idea on the weight vs a TD?. .

Loved ‘Gary’s’ Facebooky query about swapping one into his Land Rover: “No, we won’t be doing that” suggestion was to consider installing a Nissan drivetrain system if going it alone [emoji23][emoji106][emoji106]

An honest answer to the Ops question. A Y62 and be done with it.[emoji38]
