I just came in from out over in the paddock.
Saw this and Just blown away.
First met up with some from here at Licola 18 and spent most the time with Roofy catching up and so enjoyed his company. So much to speak about as we went to the same tech school (Warragul) as it turned out. We did not live far from each other back then.

Very sad to here of the loss.

To you sir Roofy.77296
This is the way I saw Roofy, you may interrupt it in other ways
YOUR TOOL BOX WILL BE
RAFFLED BY-AND-BYE.
I must shortly leave the banker,
For my card is long exempt,
The fire of youth has vanished from my eye,
And the saddest thought to-day
Is that when I've paesed away
My tool box will be raffled by-and-bye.

I have roamed around the country,
But I'm getting stiff and old,
And now I'm travelling home again to die,
Though you're young and strong to-day
Yet the years will pass away,
And your tool box will be raffled by-and-bye.
When I was but a 'prentice lad
just starting at the trade
Some chump would make me mad enough to cry,
But I heeded not his chaff,
For the saying made me laugh,
That his tool box would be raffled by-and-bye
When I became a journeyman,
And started on the road,
With pockets light, but spirits always high,
I was never known to, shirk
From the hardest kind of work—
But, my tool box will be raffled by-and-bye.
Sometimes I thought it hard,
When I struck a stranger's yard,
And a " rumper " worked with malice in his eye,
But I merely used to grin,
As I said, " My boy go in,
But your tool box will be raffled by-and-bye.
You may often meet a sneak
Who, with manners soft and meek,
Will do his best to down you on the sly ,
Keep your eye upon the lad,
Let the saying make you glad "
That his tool box will be raffled by-and-bye.
I must end my little song,
And be jogging right along ;
My journey's end is drawing very nigh—
Take my advice : be fair,
Act the man upon the square,
For your tool box will be raffled by-and-bye.

Stay safe mate.

What an absolute bloody tragedy.
One of the most genuine, kind and authentic humans you were ever likely to meet.....the hat and the voice so distinct. He will be missed.
Roofy used to regularly check in on me with a message when I was going through my illness and I always enjoyed having a quiet beer with him on trips we did when he was about....that dry humour and life lived.
So sad and all the love and thoughts to Jane, his family and those that were close to him.
A bloody tragedy......
Hugs to all....

Back at camp now and still have no words to properly describe our mate!

He was one of the last of a true blue bloke with a heart of gold, great person to sit back at a fire and talk shit.

Always had a good saying to every problem discussed and always looked on the bright side of life.

Jane, if you’re reading this mate I just want to hug ya, I don’t even know what to say to you, big hugs mate, my condolences to you my friend but I’m also happy he found this place here.

We had a lot of chats at camp tonight on how Roofy loved us young idiots playing up and damaging our cars watching old mate shake his head at us but always keen to jump in as a passenger and rip it up in one of our pig GQ’s. he loved us and we loved him even more, love ya Roofy, catch up for a chat one day old mate!!!

Was lucky to spend an afternoon with Craig just before Christmas, and saw Jane later in the day when she got home, what top people.
He was in good spirits as I have always found him and we yarned for 4 or 5 hours, it's so hard to believe he is gone as he looked and got about as fit as a bull.
I am going to miss him, a good bloke given his wings and flown away from us, or maybe flicked the locker in..

"My Memory Library" by Sarah Blackstone

Imagine if I was given one moment,
just a single slice of my past.
I could hold it close forever,
and that moment would always last.

I'd put the moment in a safe,
within my hearts abode.
I could open it when I wanted,
and only I would know the code.

I could choose a time of laughing,
a time of happiness and fun.
I could choose a time that tried me,
through everything I've done.

I sat and thought about what moment,
would always make me smile.
One that would always push me,
to walk that extra mile.

If I'm feeling sad and low,
if I'm struggling with what to do.
I can go and open my little safe,
and watch my moment through.

There are moments I can think of,
that would lift my spirits everytime.
The moments when you picked me up,
when the road was hard to climb.

For me to only pick one moment,
to cherish, save and keep,
Is proving really difficult,
as I've gathered up a heap!

I've dug deep inside my heart,
found the safe and looked inside,
there was room for lots of moments,
in fact hundreds if I tried.

I'm building my own little library,
embedded in my heart,
for all the moments spent with you,
before you had to part.

I can open it up whenever I like,
pick a moment and watch it through,
My little library acts as a promise,
I'll never ever forget you

I found this poem after my dad passed and found it quite inspirational. Hope it can do the same for others

Just so we can have a fire and make a fun night of it to celebrate his life and tell stories.

Been thinking over the past days and wanted to add some words.

I have only been around the forum for a short time (Licola 18 being first met up). I would like to share some comments that Roofy made to me while we were having a yarn by the fire side at Licola:

“they are a real good and genuine lot people here and across the forum”

Craig spoke very admirably of the overwhelming generosity and friendship within this close community. Craig specifically mentioned a time when a forum trip had been arranged, unfortunately he experienced a significant engine failure in his vehicle and the forum got it together, rallied around and pitched in to help him to sort it out.

I cannot recall all the exact details, but he was extremely grateful of all the good will and genuine friendship.

Craig spoke very fondly of you Jane.

I would have loved to been able to get to know him more as we lived our earlier years in the same district.

I will not be with you all in in person on Friday.
John

Like a track on my place, Roofy now at peace, and could tell many a journey story.

I have been thinking about what to say for days.
I lost touch with Roofy and Jane over the last few years and I regret that now.
I enjoyed my times sitting around a campfire chatting and laughing. I enjoyed our trips together whether in the same car or separate cars.
My favourite trip was when Roofy, Katwoman and I got stuck in the Bush (okay I was the one who got bogged) and wondering if we would spend the night in the middle of nowhere.

The last 2 weeks have been the hardest ever in my life. I feel sad but I also feel very happy that Craig had so many friends from this forum. He could never understand why young blokes like all of you would want to be his mate. I'm too old and grumpy he would say. He certainly had some great times with you all.

Today we celebrated the life of our very good mate Craig "Roofy" Whitehead. By the turnout today he had so many friends and there were so many forum members show up today from far and wide.

Bob made a truly touching speech which certainly pulled everybody's heart strings.

RIP Roofy old friend, see you at the next camp fire.

RIP Roofy my great old mate. Hope you saw today so many people who held you dear in their hearts. Even from your new camp, wherever that may be, today you taught me the virtue of patience. Worked through 40km of jammed freeway coming home and didnt give a shit. No stress whatsoever. Would have sat through 10 of them to be there today. See you again one day mate. Have the billy on.

So sorry I was unable to attend today Jane. I only met you both a year or so ago, but felt part of Roofy`s clan.A gentleman of great character and honesty. Today was a day held so very special to me as it was the anniversary of the passing of my wife 3 years ago. But while sitting and quietly sipping on a southern in remembrance of her .I also sipped a quiet drop for a very special friend Roofy. RIP Mate.

Hello Roofys boss here.
The last 2 weeks have been the hardest ever in my life. I feel sad but I also feel very happy that Craig had so many friends from this forum. He could never understand why young blokes like all of you would want to be his mate. I'm too old and grumpy he would say. He certainly had some great times with you all.

Was a emotional day for all I nearly kept it together but you got me too Bob. That would if been bloody hard but thank you for getting up and saying something for us all here.

I use to look forward to every camp where Roofie was coming along. He was such a easy going bloke and I could chat for hours with. Shooting guns hunting farming etc he was a man full of yarns and experiences.

Never think your not welcome Jane I really hope you can make it to future trips and we would be happy to pick you up in the way past but you may have to share the back seat with a lil girl who wont stop talking hehe.

Was blown away by how many people came today and distance driven but that's just a testament to our forever great mate

Rest easy old mate and look forward to catching up around a big ol bonfire again one day.

So nice to read all these comments supporting Jane and remembering Roofy.
There are so many names of folk who were here when the forum first started that were able to send O'l mate off in style and Bob has done an astounding job by your comments.
I've been away from here for a while and Roofy suggested I log on and have a look around which I did, not saying anything but seeing what he was talking about.
Life doesn't allow us to do everything we want and getting back to Victoria on Friday wasn't possible but I can say I was in a quiet place at the time of his service with my hat over my heart thinking of a lost mate.
He always talked of the get togethers with a lot of you and always remembers the help we all gave him and Jane. A nicer bloke would be hard to find.
Thank you to all of you.

So on the day of the funeral / wake , towards the end I held my breath & went in to see Jane , the conversation went something like this - “ hi Jane I’m not sure if you remember me “ , she said “oh yes I remember you” ( with a wry smile ) , I said “ I had the honour of giving Roofy his 1st Jagër bomb at Licola “ , she said “ yes I remember that & so did he” well that was the end of me - I cried like a baby 😭 , I only knew him for a short time but he made quite an impact . A truely genuine down to earth bloke . RIP .

Nice Sprock. I dont think there'll be another bloke on this forum like Sir Roofy. He was cut from a different cloth that's no longer made. Very organic, a little rough around the edges, absolutely no synthetics included. Some wear and tear from a life tougher than we live; from pastimes rougher than sitting in a 4by up a hill, yet he was as kind and accepting as anybody could be to a younger generation not having done the things he did. Loved that man.

Hodge
15th January 2019, 08:18 AM
Absolutely gutted, I wasn't able to make it on Friday. Just returned home from some FIFO work.
I've only ever seen and spoken to Craig two or three times at a each of the meetups.
But the very first time I met him, his first words to me was some strong advice!!

I walked up to him next to a fire, and introduced my self, I'm so and so ... And when I told him my forum name, he went "Ohhhhhh you're Hodge"
Then randomly he put his hand on my shoulder leaned toward me , his Akubra almost hitting my forehead, and said, mate you really need to stop stressing and just drive the thing!
This was during the time where I was worrying about some 3L problems, so that's where he was coming from!

Wise words Craig mate, wise words! Stress less people, lifes too short for that!

RIP my friend.

I had an idea of another meet at MB’s property Bob around Easter time but not necessarily on that weekend.

Just so we can have a fire and make a fun night of it to celebrate his life and tell stories.

I was also thinking everyone has to wear a Roofy hat or similar and celebrate his life in a fun environment with awesome views, camp fire and good company.

What a massive job by Nissan Patrol forum yesterday. Thanks to all your help I now have enough wood probably for a couple of winters. I will now just have to maintain the huge block. I also have a revamped chook pen. Once it's fenced I can put a couple of chooks in it and have lovely fresh eggs. This was a massive job and I don't know how to thank you all enough. It has taken away a lot of stress for me.I know Craigie would be so appreciative too. This is the second time that you have been such a help. Thank you thank you thank you. There are some wonderful people on this forum.

Yeah what a wicked day is was for us. The size of that wood pile the Rossco and Winnie got and the amount of clean up done was amazing. I wish I didn't have to leave at 3pm as I know there was a few more things that had to be done. But the place came up a treat.

I can't believe the endurance of Winnie! He barely broke a sweat splitting all that timber. What an athlete!

Yeah I really love to have one of those splitters at my place for a bit. I got a few bigguns that I have failed to split by hand.

Yeah I'm thinking I will have to hire one. I will wait to Rossco has finished the last lot of trees at my place first though. There one more massive pine that has to go.

I am in the market for a fossil fuel log splitter (30-40Tonne) - Give me some details of your machine mate. Make, model, ram capacity(stoke / force) and can it handle those gnarly ones(knotted jobbies) and when does it start to complain.

Had a hernia repair last year, so have to stop throwing billets over shoulder and down on back of axe.

sugestion??

Winnie
20th March 2019, 06:47 AM
It's not my machine, it was Roofy's.
I don't know anything about it though unfortunately, all I know is that it wasn't an expensive one. My father in law has the exact same model though which I will be seeing in a couple of weeks so can get some info for you then.
It handled everything we threw at it with ease though and can be flipped up vertically.

Was wondering about vertical drop, certainly did OK job. If all good, just let me know the manufacture/type/model and I can work from there. thanks

I have just had a look and this is the model.

I have used a SuperAxe before though which is much more expensive but sooooo good to use.

Thats a neat stack there mate. I just spent a good part of today splitting a pile of wood by hand. Needless to say, its quite satisfying splitting by hand. Good to give the body a free workout too. But a hydraulic splitter would be handy though.
