G’day Team,
Looking to safely take our girls over some sand dunes in early 2019 for their first times.
Was kindly hoping for some top advice on Flag/Whip brands, lasting quality, legally required heights if any?
Many thanks in advance!
Mark & Family

Dis em pella lik lik one we usem on sky pella rack https://www.autoelec.com.au/mine-whip-1-piece-1.2-metre-led-light-safety-sand

Legally req'd heights, colours etc vary with the state, industry or bodies involved, some have min heights and some have max heights... dune buggies are 4 metres min, some mine sites are 3.5 metres max for example while the simmo is 3.5 min... go figure
Legally req'd sizes and reflective tape yes/no are a similar mish mash altho 'legally' isn't the right word I spose, should be arbitary

When we get chipped by overzealous mine site OSH nazis cause the size is 0.05mm under their reg and the cable ties don't all point the same way we just tell em "Eff off we're from the Guv mate, ya wanted a flag we got a flag"

https://www.fleetcrew.com.au/mine-spec-4wd-vehicle-hire/

... might add the latest jobbies I've seen are a bright as F$#% LED wand style which kinda don't comply with anyone but are easily the most visible esp in the red shit up north

Got mine from eBay mate. It’s a 3 piece job with air fitting clip bit in the end. I have a spare bracket here for you mate if you need. They come as a pair and I only needed one. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/12/370.jpg

I just used a bike flag mounted on the front of the roof rack which would have been ok for height but not for flag area .
And if you think that's rough of the 10 cars doing big red only one had a flag (mine) and only two had CB radios.

Just re-read E.T’s intial lead and thinking of going up top on the rack now too, less wind issues being shorter up top at higher speeds maybe?

Centre top is where I always put mine (work or play) and the spring base with the nitto blank is the go.

Drop them a line Mark, I have always found their delivery is very short, however the Xmas crush is on - I am waiting for a parcel from Ballarat via Auspost and its been 2 weeks - suspect its lost.

Im a big fan of the flag on the bull bar. in the steep dunes the bull bar will be over the crest before the roof. Much better visibility through the dunes which is the point.

The Dunes in SA dont have the same discipline at say the Simpson where at least most are trying to do radio comms. on the beaches its a little less regulated and the flag poking its head over a dune can make a big difference.

Pressing the go go button on their site direct now after hours, fingers crossed or it’s a Red Pair O Jocks on a stick again like PA used to do :-)

Ok, I’m lost again gents, trying some geometry maths here to no avail.
Do like the idea of a shorter roof top mounted one for being able to snot along a beach fast in between too.
Autoelec seems to jump from a 1.2m version straight to 2.5/3.0m bullbar mount ones I’m assuming.
Would it be worth me searching for a say 1.5/1.8 or just go bullbar tall and be done with it?

I assume mine is a 2.5m bullbar mounted one. My old one would handle 120kmh down the beach no problem mate. Might have been faster..... shhhhhhh

Hi mate go to Kmart and buy there 12mm tent pole kit, then all you need to do is but the flag
If you have a roof rack I have a simple bracket that will hold your flag in place safely.
I was the first person to make 3 piece flag poles way back when times were simpler and the dollar was strong
All you need is a piece od 20 x20x 2 rhs about 200 mil long put it in a vice and using a 3/4 flaring tool flare the end
its onle to make it easier for the flag to go in
Use contact glue to glue one of the steel pipes to go over one end

Thanks heaps Gents, more than appreciated, AB’s lost his Simo one too so we’re looking to kit up properly for family futures now. Daz is kindly checking his new Autoelec ones specs in the shed and we’re hoping 4x4 Obsession will have a couple in stock for us pre Xmas, Cheers All Legends [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

I use a old 2.5m vhf marine whip , love it because it is nice and stiff , and doesn't wave all over the place , that drives me nuts ! from a driver perspective. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/12/372.jpg

Thats what i got from 4WD Obsession. The RRP on the tag was $115 but i got 10% off when i bought it with my clutch work.

I unwrapped it earlier and its solid kit. Heavy. 3 piece. Each end is threaded so you can run it as a 2m or 3m pole. Im pretty impressed on closer inspection

Thank you all kindly, truly appreciated!
We did honestly try almost all leads given above to no avail and thankfully AB found that ‘Piranha’ (Bayswater-Vic) had plenty in stock for our collection passing through nearby oneday recently.
$130 x 2 on the shelf seemed more than fair (no postage fee) etc...

I'd put it on the bull bar (if allowed where you are operating... some sites specify centre roof or as close as possible)

If on the roof I would take one section out and go with 2 metres
