Welcome, Manuel! Interesting combination! Does the engine fit or do you need to modify the clutch?

I'll try you planned with the help of google translator so I apologize for any mistake in English.

Nissan Motor is CABSTAR BD 30T

Clutch is Xtreme outback KNI24008DCBXHD for Nissan Patrol but de de componentes is for NISSAN 350Z as you can see, d'ont now why the cluch is 25 cm. instead of 24 cm of the PATROL

Cloche in Portuguese we call the part that connects the engine to the gearbox

CLOCHE is from NISSAN D21 TERRANO or NAVARRA

Nice work.

Did the engine bolt straight up to the Patrol/Safari gearbox and if it did was it a petrol or diesel gearbox (what engine did you remove to fit the BD30)?
Have you got any photo's of the engine?

Tony

Hello Tony
I'll try to explain what you ask for help with some photos.
The original car is a NISSAN PATROL GQ 2.8 Turbo 6 cyl. Diesel
The only components that are not original car are:
Engine: NISSAN Cabstar 110 - -3000 cc engine turbo disel BD30.
CLUTCH HOUSING - NISSAN TERRANO 2.7 Diesel or Diesel D21 NISSAN NAVARRA
Everything else belongs to the NISSAN PATROL GQ 2.8 turbo disel
Gearbox - NISSAN PATROL GQ 2.8 turbo disel
Axles - NISSAN PATROL GQ 2.8 turbo disel
until the ratio of the axes is-NISSAN PATROL GQ 2.8 turbo disel
the only problem is that this engine Cabstar is very short in size and is only 2800rpm rotation has to be compensated with increased diameter wheel as in my case as 39.5 x12, 5x15 with tires 37 inches but is also good.
33 inch tires start in 4th gear and is very hard and low speed

short engine size also brings problems to climb mountains is very light in front and have a tendency to lift the front and lose traction on the front axle, must be offset by putting a winch on the front bumper and solves the problem.

It is an impressive machine is a lot like driving in OFFROAD has the ability to climb hills in 2nd gear in low acceleration and rarely gets jammed

Thanks Manuel, I'm always curious to hear about engine conversions and this is a conversion I have not seen before. The BD30 engine looks like a close relative of the TD27 and QD32, do you know if the BD engine is direct injection?
With that much space in front of the engine you have room for a big intercooler.

Yes it is direct injection and cylinder head is not Aluminium as RD28T and therefore did not have overheating problems as RD28T has and still has another advantage that is to spend very little disel.
the flywheel is about almost twice the weight of RD28T giving you an incredible torque, no need to pack on the uphill walk right out of the accelerator and giving back what he answers without using the clutch.

As you can see here a GQ with a engine Cabstar BD30 but with a geometry turbo of the BMW X5 makes these wonders

Hello Manuel,
Excuse me for my inglish. I'm from Spain, a neighbor. I wonder if the anchors engine and gearbox must be modified in the chassis or use some adapters iron engine and gearbox. I would also like to know if you use the radiator GR 2.8 or the DB 30. Is it necessary to modify the flywheel of the engine?. Are they the same transmissions GR 2.8 or have modified the bars?. Do you have more pictures of the mechanics?. The groups of axes are those of the GR 2.8 or short rear 5.3:1.

Cheers

Fantastic car ! is it complicated to conect al the electricsof the bd30 turbo ? does it have an ecu ?

I think its a real competitor for the td42 in terms of offroad capability !

Nice ride!!

I was thinking for putting that engine in my Patrol.
What modifications are needed?

Thanks

The bell housing is the issue. With the Mk with a SD33T the bell housing had to change. Lucky the motor I brought came with the bell housing to suit ( out of a civilian ED33 ). Remove my old unit and bolted straight on the MK 5 speed. It would appear to be the TD27, QD32 size and information I found in US the RD28T housing would suit. So that is the GQ and D21 series gearboxes. I understand the BD30 block is the same as the ZD30. As the crank and pistons are interchangeable. Lucky the input shaft length was all the same and splines the same on the MK manual gearbox. The slave cylinder sits on the same side as the SD33/T, only at the bottom. New clutch line and shorten the push rod by 40mm from the MK unit.

The engine mounts need to be changed. I had new ones welded to the frame closer to the fire wall about 300mm. (that is for the MK model). Ebay for new engine mounts to suit.

Wiring was ignition power to the diesel pump for the fuel solenoid and change from external alternator regular to internal. No glow plugs are used. thought heater plate on the intake is installed(not used). My BD30 has no taco pick up. So no input to my taco at present.

Changed the throttle cable. Made a longer unit from a Navara v6 Ute from the wreckers. $5.00

Air intake from MK pre cleaner to motor intake 3" and silicon bends down to 2 1/2 on the intake.

Starter motor is on drivers side. SD33T is on the passengers side. Ford falcon starter cable 3 meters long fitted. again from the wreckers for $5.00

Exhaust manifold sits on passenger side same as the MQ/MK. As the SD33 unit sits back into the fire wall the BD30 exhaust hits the recess. BD30 same exhaust pattern as TD/ TB42. Modified turbo manifold already owned made out of steam pipe. The maximum width was 150mm. Cut cylinder 1 & 6, blank, bolt straight in. Exhaust shop made new pipe to connect to existing exhaust.

Used existing radiator. Runs cold. modified ford electric radiator fan ( again wreckers $40.00 bucks)and and installed one side of radiator. The MK has 3 core radiator as standard. Removing the cooling fins between cores to reduce cooling surface but keep water volume. Electric fan is set to turn on at 84 degrees. The temp sensor is installed in the fins. Radiator hoses is as as SD33/T. Return passenger bottom and cooling drivers side top. Inverse for the L28. extended radiator hoses.

A/C and power steering brackets to be made to suit.

Diff on the KM are 4.6 ratio. Will change tire size to 33". I do not think the MQ/MK came out with any other ratio. I would say 4.3 ratio would be good. Running 31" with 4.6 diffs, fuel economy is around the 9.8 l/100kms. BD30 to be turbo in future, after tires diff change. Other wise very happy.

To rebuild the SD33T would have been around the 6 to 10 grands. Conversion costs came in around 5 grand including towing, Qld mod plate, motor and wrecker parts. Project completed in Mach this year. Longest issue was workshop making the engine mounts and welding to the frame. It sat in the workshop for 7 days and completed in one day on the 7th day. Good job just bad service. Total time at home with me fitting engine, mods and new clutch, two 12 hours days.

Great motor. Can not wait for the turbo, as that will increase power by 20% with standard fueling. 300hp with good turbo and extra fuel.

Thanks Manuel,
I'm very interested in this because I have a GQ and a Nissan Cabstar with the BD30 engine. I've looked at the two many times and wondered "what if ?"
It would be great to throw a GQ drivetrain under the Cabstar = Cabover dual cab 6x seat 4x4 with a 2.4mx1.8m tip tray. From what I can see the "bell housing" (Clouch) of both vehicles mates up to the same gearbox, except the GQ has a transfer case where the Cabstar has an overdrive.
Cabstar has a better ratio gearbox which would work way better with the 4.1 diffs of the GQ instead of it's original 5.8 final drive.
Teriffic power and economy form the BD30 - 10L/100km and torque like a bulldozer. Direct injection full cast iron pushrod motor = reliable as sunrise.

Also have a BD30 Cabstar dualcab. Looked at 4wd conversion, should be easy with live axle leaf suspension all round. Main issue is finding easily swapable axles that have the required load rating to keep the cabstar GVM. So far the only options seem to be strengthening or custom housing for patrol units or shortening canter units
