View Full Version : Vic Australia Day trip 2018 - Forum meet!

AB
4th December 2017, 07:32 PM
Hi folks,

Time to get some numbers for a luxurious forum meet on the spectacular sandy banks of the Murray River located at Strathmerton, VIC.

A good location for most, big river with a large sandy bank (no mud) 100m long x 50m wide spot, ripper camping environment!

Strathmerton township has a pub, bakery, toilets with $2 showers only 15 minutes from camp.

The surrounding area has everything you can imagine as well.

We need numbers on who is coming so please vote above so we can lock it in and at what times.

Australia Day is Friday 26th Jan so we need to know numbers and what times you would be interested in attending.

I'm thinking people who will turn up Monday 22nd, Wednesday 24th, Thursday 25th (public holiday Friday don't forget) and Australia day 26th until the Sunday or Monday.

Please only put your name down and your intended arrival date above if you are 100% keen on coming so we can establish this forum meet up!

Keep bumping this too so everyone see's it until the end of the year so we can gain maximum exposure.

More details on exact location and plan of attack to come soon but again, a very family orientated trip is in order with respect to each other and very kid friendly of course like all of our meet ups.

Not a lot of offroading but a gigantic deep and soft sand bank as above could be fun for daily activities.

Look forward to seeing old and new faces, feel free to jump in if you are a new member, don't be shy!

Bring it on!

Cant commit to this unfortunately as we would only just been home a few days from being away up the coast for two weeks. So it all depends on getting a house sitter again for the animals. But we'd be there from the 25th'ish to the 27th if it all works out.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There is one miles upstream but pending your boat size and water level you could be hard pressed getting it down to the spot.

What size Kat?

The banks are perfect at camp to drop boat in there providing it's not a wake board boat.

Here it is...http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/12/51.jpg

Ok folks,

Below is a map showing how to get there.

This is all based getting yourself to the corner of Broome Road and Ulupna Bridge Road, Strathmerton.

You need to turn right at this intersection which is actually the continuation of Ulupna Bridge Road coming from Strathmerton but it is a very definitive intersection to turn right.

Google map direction from there where you can get the coordinates= https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/Broome+Rd,+Ulupna+VIC+3641/-35.8103157,145.4950819/@-35.8208324,145.4696307,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m8!4m7!1m5!1m1!1s0x6adf55a601d0206b :0x925ef218c87f9de3!2m2!1d145.4575539!2d-35.8304308!1m0

If you keep following the main roads from here we will put out some NP directional signs to assist and also lets all stay on channel 17. Very limited reception but sometimes SMS can work if anyone wants my mobile just PM me.

What a mob of Fucking Tools

https://www.sbs.com.au/news/greens-will-push-australia-day-date-change-in-2018-di-natale

Its a changing world Bob. What we see all too often is a minority group lobby for change as it affects them, neglecting the majority who are content and are not motivated to either change or challenge the status quo, then the changes affecting the few are pushed onto the many. For me, I am not fussed if they change the date or not. I don't really have a reason to object and can understand the objections by the indigenous community or at least the 'activists'. What would be interesting is to see what other countries do regards this same issue or if they have a single day of celebration for establishment of a new colony. I am equally happy to leave the day/date/name as it stands, but can see if the Aust Govt eventually moves towards a formal acknowledgement of the 'nations first people' then this may well be a more compelling driver to change the date or change the actual name of it. There are a number of different 'causes' coming to a head that have been accepted by the many as normal, but despised by the few who take objection to them or believe they are adversely served by them. Unless you go to the expense of the Same Sex Marriage survey, you will always get an outcome that depends entirely on the vigour of the affected few, and how vocal they are, regardless of the merit in the bigger picture. The Greens are notorious for their championing of the 'under-dog' or minority, and the move has already started by stealth I believe to change this date - ie simple 3RRR moving of their long standing best songs of the year away from the day - its a small change, but its the start of a larger crack forming. Apologies for the long winded response but it isn't a simple issue, or at least from where I stand.

So I guess the message is, fight the bastards at their own game - get organised and vocal and get your point of view out there, front and centre.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/01/124.jpgYeah it'll be a stinker alright. Make sure every body packs a good supply of sunscreen and a hat for the kiddies.
Aldi had some battery powered tent fans a couple of weeks ago and we grabbed two of them to hang from the roof of the camper at night.
Hopefully the heat puts a lot of people of going there and we get a good sized area to ourselves. Last time we camped there the nights cooled off a lot though so we should get a bearable sleep.
Does anybody know if they've put in a drop dunny within the last couple of years?

Yes you can use a gas stove or BBQ if you have a bucket full of water next to it and it is supervised the whole time it is in use.

We might bring our Weber Q instead of Phil's oven if this is the case.

Was great to meet who was there a great bunch of people who are welcoming and easy to get along with .We were very lucky that nobody got hurt.
It would be hard for people to appreciate how intense it was but it was absolutely insane.
Would have loved to have a reading on the rainfall and windspeeds but we estimated 50mm within 60 seconds and 200km/h wind speed.
My wife and daughter were inside my camper trailer when it happened and when it started getting out of control both MudRunnerTD were hanging off one corner of my tent but it lifted us in the air and collapsed the tent, wife inside holding baby and having a panic attack. Bent the main frame of my trailer which will need to either be repaired or replaced.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/01/170.jpg

Awnings flying everywhere, Pearceys was torn off the side of his caravan. MB's oztent rv5 annex ripped the stitching and was torn off.
As we were leaving we look at the rubbish dump point and reckon there were about 30 gazebo frames in the bin.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/01/171.jpg

It all stopped as soon as it started and once we had packed all our gear up we drove into town to get a motel room but nothing available so slept in the car. There was a branch that fell on a car up the road, a branch fell on top of Darren's toilet tent, roofys toilet tent ended up 400m from where it was tied down.
Truly an awful experience, but will make a great story.

Most stayed, people with caravans fared okay and except for Pearcey they got their awnings up in time so no damage there.
MudRunnerTD is on his way home cos all his bedding got wet and they had a rough night. He was busy helping me with my camper and didn't realise his was getting a hammering as well.
Would have been so humid today.
The rain went for about 2 or 3 minutes and the wind around 1 minute. The wind was blowing the sand around though and it got in everywhere, we'll be cleaning sand out for years.

We made it home safe and sound. The cruiser lived up to her reputation and broke again. Just a drive flangethis time, nothing a stubby holder, zip ties and gafa tape couldnt fix. The two gazebos took a beating, but I salvaged ebough parts from both to make one good one. The part that did surprise me was the kings roof top tent did not get damaged at all. I was in it trying to cloes the windows when the storm came through and it was really rocking and rolling on top of the truck.
As all of our sleeping gear got wet the family and I spent an uncomfortable night in the car.

Part of our major issue was that because the sand was so damn coarse and soft none of our tents were pegged down firmly, no design of peg could have got a good purchase in that.
MB took his boat out a couple of times but he had no luck. The water was the perfect refreshing temperate without being too cold.

Just got home now. Great relaxing weekend bloody shame about the crazy tornado tho. Thought it was you I passed on the highway Winnie Saturday morning ,spewn i missed you guys and everyone else but lucky I missed it by the sounds of it. Went for a drive Sunday and ended picking up a Ute load of blow up things, tent and other rubbish. Markie did a couple of runs in the tinnie doing similar and saw a couple this morning in a f350 doing the same. Also passed PV with a big rubbish trailer heading in to start the clean up too.
Great spot was sooo nice I the water was so warm. . .

Sent from my SM-G930F using TapatalkBugger didn't recognise you. Yeah definitely lucky to come the day after this time.
Have checked over all our stuff and the one pole on the camper trailer had bent and a small camp table broken in half is the only damage we got, plus lost about 20 good tent pegs. Everything else just got covered in sand. Pretty lucky at the end of the day really.
All sand is now cleaned and will look into getting this pole replaced.

We are home safe and sound now to. Was one hell of a Friday night that's for sure. Never been in wind and rain like that ever before.

Stunning spot although the thick sand shows get to hot after a few days and so bloody hot to walk on during the day. Shade was the problem but afternoon shade was great falling right over AB and our vans.

I had a great time met some more great members. Bring on the next one.

I will be planning a winter trip for cray season to echuca after this one. Few people showed interest so well see how that pans out.

Thanks all that come great company as always.

So glad to be back home and thanks to everyone who made it again!

That was a bit challenging for me that trip...lol

Bloody dog did a big sloppy poo in the back at Yea. Very bloody lucky it was on the back barn door and rear of the cab...lol

That was the icing on the cake to just get bloody home!!!

We were very lucky that nobody got hurt.
It would be hard for people to appreciate how intense it was but it was absolutely insane.
Would have loved to have a reading on the rainfall and windspeeds but we estimated 50mm within 60 seconds and 200km/h wind speed.
My wife and daughter were inside my camper trailer when it happened and when it started getting out of control both @MudRunnerTD (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/member.php?u=153) were hanging off one corner of my tent but it lifted us in the air and collapsed the tent, wife inside holding baby and having a panic attack.

Just realised I have a nasty windscreen crack on the bottom under the drivers wiper.

That one lane bitumen road into camp when you have to drop a side into the dirt for oncoming cars, I remember when a truck past me and I heard a bang.

Looks like a bloody creeper too damn it!

Hi Guys and gals, Pearcey`s home, went through Bendigo to see some folks but at both places no one home, so pushed on to Mundulla to see a very old friend and BBP she wasn`t home, so I waited for about 30mins then headed home.
Thanks folks for a great few days relaxing and drinking. Must say Friday night could have turned out much worse, no one was injured I don`t think there was any vehicles damaged, it`s a wonder with all that metal flying around. seemed like main damage was to camping gear ( easy to replace ).
