View Full Version : Snow trip August

Just got back from one of the best snow trips I've ever been on!

We got a huge dump of snow during the week and the weekend was simply perfect weather with great food and company.

There is nothing better than being the first vehicle on a track with thick snow ploughing your way through! Darren came undone on a track and ended up taking us a solid hour or more of all different types of recoveries to get his gu out of a ridiculous bog. We snapped winch ropes and had to grind off shackles and all types of double line pulls to finally get him out!

Serious question here guys. Whats it like driving in snow? Similar to sand or more mid like?
Just interested because being in WA its highly unlikely i will ever get to driveon or through the stuff.
Go on you lot you can start laughing now in regards to my question

Was a bit of a recovery effort this one. Daz had a little run off moment, although we all had at least one on this track. Being first it was hard to see where the track is under the snow and Daz was set for a swichback on a downhill but ended up being a water run off. . . bugger, missed the tree tho which was good . . .

Luckily Markies beast of a winch ended up saving the day after AB's rope snapped. Used 2 snatch blocks in the end after trying a heap of other ways. . . It was stuck pretty good. Wish i got a photo but there was a river flowing through the front wheel by the end of it!

How'd the golden horse go Rossco , sure hope you hooked the heater hoses back up .Golden horse went great yep heater definatly works nice, certainly need that. . .

A couple of things but all good. Had issues both mornings with the diesel waxing, did put a fair amount of additive in but still had problems with fuel not getting through. Me & phil both had problems and also both had plastic ryco inline fuel filters so looks like they were the culprit.

Also had a couple of death wobble episodes on the road which is never cool. We gave the tie rod & drag link ends a bit of a grease and that fixed it to get home but Panhard rod bushes have a little bit of movement so pretty sure that's the culprit.

Apart from that great was really good to drive the thing again it's certainly better than it's ever been.

Also got some new wiper blades fitted at autobarn on the way up as the ones from the new cab were terrible and couldn't see anything but they're great now ☺

Nah I don't agree Winnie sorry mate. It is almost identical to driving in heavy sand. Same principles apply. Momentum is king. Wheel spin is the enemy. It sucks power and heavy deep virgin snow is like dry Deep sand. Footprint is king and muddied aren't needed. Big and wide will win the day.

Driving in wheel ruts that are packed down and icy can be very slippery and can compare to mud though and you can have trouble stopping and taking off. In deep snow if you stop you might not take off again. Back and forth in your own wheel ruts will often recover yourself the same as sand too. If you do alot of beach driving you'd love the snow.

Had an awesome weekend gents I will log on with Tappa Nd post some pics.

Awesome weekend. Phil picked a great spot.

Blizzard conditions going in on Friday that magically cleared as we arrived at camp and started again after we went to bed.!!!! Sat under the stars by the fire on Friday night! Awesome.

Woke up Saturday covered in Snow. Clear skies for breakfast.

Had a great Drive Saturday and found an awesome track that was fully snowed in without any trace of wheel ruts or tracks, just space between trees and deep snow. Was Epic. It must have gone for 10 or 12kms and was glorious.

Saturday night the snow again cleared and we had another night by the fire under a clear sky with stars. Was awesome 9 nice again.

Mark might have smashed out the Galliano Hot Shots and we all used the pile of snow beside us as our own private want. Was an Epic night with some great laughs.

Sunday morning we woke again to a cover of fresh powder. What a great weekend away.

This ticked a heap of boxes gents, I was lucky enough to share it with my son and a great bunch of blokes I hope to grow old with. Pleasure gents. Thanks for the memories.

Im used to driving on sand. I spend pretty much most of my off road time on it. Some of the beaches are stupidly soft and powdery here so would love to try snow at some stage.

Grouse time had for sure 👍🏼 On the way home Harry kept saying - it was good to see the guys again haha - Harry the veteran camper . Fairly epic drive up in the dark in deep snow & mild blizzard , shame I had to go home on Saturday but was still good . Stubbies , Wild Honey Sting shots ( AB ) , slurps of Jack Daniels ( MudRunnerTD ) , Stubbies , Bundaberg black ( MB ) , Stubbies etc etc certainly kept us warm on the inside 👍🏼 . Feel free to post up any of my pics I sent you guys as I'm still having issues putting pics up .

Nah, gotta be out in it! It was funny that the circle of heat extended about 2m from the fire then it was frigid cold. In the morning the snow was streaked and melted from the IR radiation given off by the fire - looked weird. Snow drop was very light when we were sitting around the fire, just got heavy everytime we moved away from it. Great experience.

Phil carries them permanently but id be surprised if anyone else had any. They are pretty pointless for this type of snow to be honest. Chains work very well for breaking ice packed on bitumen but make no real advantage in heavy snow. When the snow gets deep and heavy your back to big footprint. 35 x 12.5 tyres. ATs are ok and wheel spin is your enemy.

PeeBee
23rd August 2017, 03:39 PM
Agree, I carry mine for frictionless surfaces where the only way thru is to chug your way across the surface. I have found them useless in snow full stop, and on the very rare times its got icy it was a case of slow right down as the patches are small.

Next year Gents, mark it down. Looking at the weather prediction for this week the snow falls have dropped right off, so we fluked it big time I reckon. The season is not over and I am sure there will still be snow around at that elevation - 1500m for a little while yet.

AB

Not at all, we don't even know what to do next...

Matty newby was keen to come down for the next one too but it's just so unpredictable for us getting good snow. This trip above was insane but we were so lucky!

Even a week or two either side of this trip would be a quarter of that snow.

I would be devo if we planned a trip and you interstaters got 10mm!

This trip was extremely roughing it, I think interstaters coming down with family would struggle on this trip which brings us back to a base camp with luxuries.

This Licola trip was lucky and pricing the other side of the mountain for cabins was pretty pricey.

We need to think about 2018 carefully if you guys are keen to make journey that's all to ensure we get good snow but family friendly too.

I have done some ringing around and the West side of the mountain is a little more expensive but the weekend we were in Licola with only a little sight seeing snow an hour or so away I had friends staying the other side that had 600mm of snow on the ground at their accommodation and 100mm of snow over night. I see the value in that.

Must add that Licola's valley lower altitude warm base camp/cabins (plenty o wood) with surrounding tracks have seen some of the interstaters and my mob smiling a day or two at least after experiencing:-)

Not sure about tracks or seasonal closures there. It's also a bloody long way. I have been doing snow trips up to woods point for 15 years and always get plenty of snow. The club used to stay at the woodspoint pub which was great. There is another at McAdams gap that will cater all meals and snacks including hot supper and full bar in private chalet. Limited to 20 though from memory but kids could go on the floor of rooms with parents.

AB, You could still have some in tents/swags and leave the room accom to the women/kids. Its been 20 yrs since I have been to McAdams Gap, but this way you knock off a couple of variables in one hit.

1) comfy family friendly area with under cover communal area and McAdams can still cater and get a bigger clip,

2) the guys on the forum who do like or want to experience the snow camping experience without heat and ball freezing conditions can do so with a prop on the property and still have access to showers and toilets

3) Its closer to our side of Melbourne for our western friends

4( its exclusively yours for the entire time so no unexpected visitors blowing in or competition for the area

5) if its in the right time of the year you are right up there above the snowline and don't have to drive 1 hr to get to it and 8 hrs to return, unless you elect to go the scenic route like this year!!! Track closure is a concern however if we cracked it like the tracks on my weekend, there was more than enough opportunity to play around simply on the roads that are open. Unsure where this sits with location to Mt Skene and maybe some work needs to be done, as discussed, around access??

Just my thoughts but I would not disount the venue - maybe a call or contact to the owners of McAdams to pose this scenario would be in order.

Yeah I think Darren is going to give them a buzz and find out some more info of potential numbers so we'll see what happens.

Camping in 600mm of snow would not be impressive for the wives though...lol

Drinks at bar prices too I thought was mentioned which we should consider could add up without BYO licence maybe we should check on too. I don't drink so cheap for me :-)

As I said, only those who want to harden up their character could sleep outside, whilst the tribe stays indoors. Anyway, lets see what the big guy finds out. I am more at home in a meter of snow than indoors to be honest.

IMHO if it is true that $100 pppn + drinks for x 3-4 nights @ McAdam's is too expensive. From memory Licola camp is around $80 for a family per night and between Phil's ovens and big pots we can all chip in to eat like Kings,Queens,Princes & Princesses:-) Plenty of room for our kids to run and enjoy the nightly activities/trampolines/playgrounds/sandpits etc...
Ooh, and the local logging members kindly supply free 2 stroke & sharp chains in their trailers & utes :-)

Hard to argue with this logic Mark. I am happy either way, as the cabins were fine as was the location. Just putting the options out there. There are plenty of other weekends to 'go rough' for sure.

Tbh I agree with Andy the trip roughness will determine the family attending lol.
I do owe Sophia a trip after taking Matilda to the Gawler Ranges.
But the whole family wants in for the snow..
Might just have to drag the dove up there lol..
But as a family trip I do vote cabin setup.
What happens to those cabins that were a big hit.
Is that Lacolia?

Yeah Licola.

It's the best place for a large group like us but thick fluffy snow is unpredictable.

However, if the snow is average we can do a day trip and find more too.

Let's wait and see what old mate comes back with first.
