Looking around on the computer and thought I`d type wheel winches to see what would turn up. Found a couple and probably be more variants may be.

Personally I think they're a gimmick and no substitute for a proper winch , having said that I bogged an EL falcon in a creek bed once and tried using rope around the wheel that wanted to spin attached to a tree . If only the rope hadn't been telecom rope it might have worked .

Some people see them as a gimmick, others can`t understand how they work with out a diff lock and some think they`re okay. Proper winches have faults too in ways in other peoples eyes.

I watched a little filum on them and heard they`re not for competition, but might be good enough just for a quick get you out.

As long it works , doesn't matter if it's a hand winch as long as it gets you out of the poo .

Too true, if not in a rush good ol serious hand winches will always do! Still got our old boys original 'Tirfor' hand me down. Got us outa the poo always although may have dropped a few trackside bum nuts ourselves to finally get there :-)
One major consideration I believe to look for in any winch is for it to work if the engine or drivetrain is unfortunately dead and or swamped :-(

Zachary MB. I`ve all ways been one for looking out for a different take on an old idea. I know the old winch wheels were around before electric winches and I guess they were saying some thing similar about electric winches when they first started to come out. I have thought a few times on the idea and thought if I posted a link, it might get people thinking.

Works for me.

OK for some applications, but not if your filling up with water and need to get out quick.

Considering most winches are fitted to the front of the vehicle, these devices are good for reversing out of trouble.

Reversing out of trouble is often the wisest way to go...

Try it. See if it works.

My mate has used a tie-down strap wrapped around his wheel and it worked.

I've kept a 2.5t tie-down in my box of tricks ever since (just in case).
