People,

Spending 3 weeks doing the Gibb including up to Kalumburu (no boat though).

Wondering what rod/reel/line combo is worth taking if you could only take 1 rod and reel.

Looking forward to what you all think.

I'd be interested if anyone knows too, but I suspect that like many places a boat is what is needed. The only folk I know who have fished up there (& caught some impressively large fish) reckoned they would have been wasting there time without the boat. With 3 weeks for the trip you wont get much time for fishing.

The Kimberley (note not plural ;) ) is my favourite part of Australia (so far) but I haven't made it up to Kalumburu yet.

Yeh cheers Cuppa it's not a fishing trip at all so we aren't really fussed but maybe pulling in something to eat once or twice might be nice. Hopefully get onto some mud crabs in Kalumburu!

If i was heading up there i would probably take my 7'6 GP rod and reel. Got a 4000 series reel on it spooled with 15lb mono
Heavy enough for bigger fishies and light enough for some small ones too.

We spent 3 nights at Kulumbaru, but back in 1997. Fishing was excellent off the beach, a french guy was fishing and pulling in sharks every night. Big crocs up there too, so no standing in the water or wading out.

I did what they called a charter out to a Bommie, caught a big fish, cant recall the species. The only thing I would say is that the road from the GibbRiver turnoff was a nightmare from a corrugation perspective. 2 guys with boats turned around on our way up there. At one point I had to stop the car and have a break - the locals are in charge of road maintenance, not the shire. I didn't see a single boat whilst we were there that made it to K.

Greta spot for sure, dont miss Mitchell falls on the way up. We caught the chopper back, after the 2hr walk in there following beer cans nailed to trees. Would love to be back there again.

hey i was wondering if anybody knows when the upper fraser opens for springs im hearign july 15 and if anybody knows what they go after that would be great too , called the dfo and they said the fraser is closed to all salmon fishing right now? buddy says june 15 who knows??
