View Full Version : Photo Comp May ’17 - BIRDS

Cuppa
1st May 2017, 09:50 PM
This month’s topic, chosen by our April winner TPC Thanks Tony.

BIRDS ........ Oh boy I can see another big month coming up. We all have photos of birds don’t we? I know I probably have more bird photos than anything else & choosing three is gonna be tough. Tony (TPC) was surprised we have not had this topic before - so was I & I maintain the list of past topics!
So go for it folks - but I think we’ll stick to those of the feathered variety. I wonder if Adrian (Fracster) is still watching from pommyland, there will be some stiff competition if he is!

New forum members very welcome (& encouraged) to enter.

regards
Cuppa

Ps. Please read though the pink bit below if you haven’t done so yet. Ta.

Pps. It always helps to post a brief explanatory caption with your entry.

Regards
Cuppa

Past winning photos can be viewed here. (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?29697-Photo-Comp-Past-Topics-amp-Winners&p=535534#post535534)

Monthly Photo Competition guidelines (Please read)

* Each month a new competition thread will commence & all forum members are invited to submit their photos .

* Maximum of three entries per person.

* Multiple entries should be made in separate posts

* Each entry should consist of a single photograph & a short description only

* Comments pertinent to entries are encouraged, but please do not use this thread to engage in banter

* Photos MUST have been taken by the member posting the photos or members of their party.

* Any photo which has been a winner will not be eligible for re-entry in any future competition.

* Please do not post photos that are not entries in the competition.

* Please do not re-post other folks entries within the thread

* The winner of the month's competition gets to choose the following month's competition topic.

* All members are encouraged to vote for the photos they think should win. This will be done by pressing the 'Thanks' button located underneath each post. Toward the end of the month the date & time of competition closure will be announced. Following this time the thread will be locked & the 'Thanks' counted to determine the winner.

* 'Thanks' may be added or withdrawn at any time during the month up until the competition is closed.
You are welcome to thank as many different posts as you wish!

* In the event of a tied first place I will add a casting vote, except in circumstances where my entry is one of the tied ones, in which case I will withdraw my entry.

*Inappropriate photos eg, sexual, racist, violent etc are unacceptable & should not be posted.

Thanks for your cooperation

1. 'George' was a King Parrot who visited us daily for several months each year over 5 years. Since we moved he now visits our nearest neighbours. I could get him on my hand, & to fly across the garden & land on my hat. Usually he would hang around for a couple of hours at a time & follow me around. Occasionally he would bring his partner ('Mildred') & one year a youngster, but they were never as 'tame' as George.

Was hoping no-one would ask. :) Red legs is a Jabiru but I’m not sure what his smaller mate is. Also not sure what the ducks are. Whistling Ducks are common up there, but I don’t think that this is what these are, colour is right, but markings dont look right. It was a phenomenal place & a real unexpected surprise. A timber built bird hide built over the water with a metal mesh floor. A huge variety of birds & nature in action - watched a croc stalking a heron for 30 minutes, before he gave up & came cruising just inches below my feet. Watched Jabirus catching fish, & one struggling to extract & (then kill) a snake from the water weed for close to an hour! (You can see a pic of that in the Comp winners thread ;)). Was like being in the middle of a David Attenborough doco.

Wow, great to get so many votes, haven't had this many in quite a while. I could claim that it was a response to my threats, but I think we all know it's because we had so many quality entries.

And out of that pool of quality one photo has very deservedly risen to the top. I think it is certainly one of the best entries we've ever had, & probably (IMHO) THE best we've had to date.

I am of course referring to clubbyr8's shot, with 19 votes, of the New Holland Honeyeater. Seems that many of us could not help but be impressed by the clarity of the shot, not just of the subject, but it's surrounds too. Brilliant!

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2014/09/45.jpg

In second place with 16 votes is 'yours truly' with my shot of the Blue Winged Kookaburra. Thought I was a potential winner until I saw Clubby's Honeyeater.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/05/249.jpg

In third place with 15 votes is michaelgreeny's Barn Owl .... which took me back to my childhood. I grew up with a stuffed one of these in a glass case watching over me in bed!

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/05/250.jpg

Congratulations clubbyr8 - a well deserved win!

Now, I have a further announcement.

Since establishing this photo comp back in September '13 I have enjoyed seeing it become a valued part of our forum, & just one of the 'glues' that helps to hold us together as a community. One thing in particular has been pleasing to me is the consistency of judgement of the 'voting panel'. Whilst I may not have always chosen the same winner as the majority, I think the majority have always got it right. From time to time someone posts something for a laugh, & they get it, but the winners have always been chosen on merit. I thank you all for that.

Anyway, tonight is the time to announce that because of my wife & I's long term travel plans getting close to fruition, it is time to hand over the reigns to someone else.

I think you will agree that TPC (Tony) is an obvious choice, he has supported the competition from the beginning, has been a winner more than once (most recently last month). Tony will take over as of this month. I'm sure he will do a great job in his own style. Please give him the support you have given me. Thanks everyone.

I look forward to capturing more potential entries as MrsTea & I endeavour to fulfill our nomadic dreams.

Cuppa

clubbyr8 please could you PM me with your choice of topic for June. (Past topics can be viewed HERE (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?29697-Photo-Comp-Past-Topics-amp-Winners&p=535534#post535534)).
