2H (2 wheel drive high range) is for normal driving on sealed surfaces or surfaces with good traction. In this position all drive is sent to the rear wheels.
4H (4 wheel drive high range) is for high speed (up to 80km/h approximately) low traction surfaces like sand or wet dirt roads. In this position drive is sent to all 4 wheels and the gearing is the same as 2H.
4L (4 wheel drive low range) is for low speed low traction driving, steep ascents and descents. In this position drive is sent to all 4 wheels BUT the gearing is much lower than in 2H or 4H.

2H is transfer gear lever in the forward position closest to the dash.
4H is engaged by pulling the transfer lever back one position.
4L is engaged by pushing down and pulling the transfer lever back further.

Patrols do not have a 2L position.
