There has been an extraordinary amount of rain over the summer months in this part of the world. Many locals and tourists are taking advantage of the conditions and getting out to flowing water and waterholes full to the brim.

Now that we have the new truck, we have done the same:

Redbank Waterhole, Owen Springs:

Birthday Waterhole.

This is a nice 15km track, easy to moderate (few sandy river patches) with some fabulous scenery along the way. It is a great base to do some exploring and hiking in the West Macs. The waterhole was lovely swimming:

The main booklet is due out soon, but this freebie pocket guide to the Red Centre may be of interest to some. http://www.kimberleyaustralia.com/rcpgdp.html

I would be happy to advise anyone about Central Australia when they are passing through. I work in the centre of town and can catch up for a cup of coffee any time and look at some maps.

I was a tour guide in the area for many years so have a good understanding of how to get the best out of a trip.

Dude! Nice pix. Birthday Waterhole? Where is that?
I've spent a bit of time out there and am heading back in June.
I'd love to visit that waterhole - any heads up on exactly where that is?

It is very easy to find.

Head west from Alice on Larapinta Drive then 50ks out onto the Namatjira Drive turnoff. Then about 5-10ks along there is a turnoff right where the Namatjira crosses the Hugh River. Track is only 15km to Birthday Waterhole and another 7km into Hugh Gorge.

I don't think the waterhole will be this nice in a few months though. We have had exceptional rainfall over summer but they do drop pretty quickly once the flows stop. Still a great trip with some excellent hikes in the area.
