View Full Version : December/January 2016/17 Photo Comp

Cuppa
1st December 2016, 09:01 PM
As in previous years our competition will run for two months over the festive season, wrapping up in late January.
Instead of the usual limit of three entries, you may post 6 entries (but please ensure just one entry per post).

Our Dec/Jan topic, has been chosen by our last month’s winner VK2FMIA for a second month running. He’s on a roll, I wonder if anyone will knock him off his perch this time around!

The topic is one which I expect to be popular - you probably already have some good entries in your collection, but if not how about taking your camera/phone out & about with you over the festive season & new year.

"Rural Decay" - Photos of old farm machinery, cars, buildings, tractors, trucks etc. that are slowly becoming part of the landscape.

regards
Cuppa

Ps. Please read though the pink bit below if you haven’t done so yet. Ta.

Pps. It always helps to post a brief explanatory caption with your entry.

Regards
Cuppa

Past winning photos can be viewed here. (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?29697-Photo-Comp-Past-Topics-amp-Winners&p=535534#post535534)

Monthly Photo Competition guidelines (Please read)

* Maximum of three entries per person. (6 for Dec/Jan comp)

* Multiple entries should be made in separate posts

* Each entry should consist of a single photograph & a short description only

* Comments pertinent to entries are encouraged, but please do not use this thread to engage in banter

* Photos MUST have been taken by the member posting the photos or members of their party.

* Any photo which has been a winner will not be eligible for re-entry in any future competition.

Toward the end of the month the date & time of competition closure will be announced. Following this time the thread will be locked & the 'Thanks' counted to determine the winner.

* 'Thanks' may be added or withdrawn at any time during the month up until the competition is closed.
You are welcome to thank as many different posts as you wish!

* In the event of a tied first place I will add a casting vote, except in circumstances where my entry is one of the tied ones, in which case I will withdraw my entry.

*Inappropriate photos eg, sexual, racist, violent etc are unacceptable & should not be posted.

Thanks for your cooperation

Info courtesy of Exploroz website:

About a hundred kilometres east of Neale Junction there’s an interesting deviation. In 1993 a Goldfields Air Services twin engine Cessna crash-landed in the Great Victoria Desert. The pilot and the aircraft's census collector passengers survived the crash and were rescued after a few days. In 1995 a track to the crash site was cut over the sand dunes and much of the plane still remains, apart from any valuable parts, which have long since been souvenired. It's a worthwhile diversion but the track can be fairly difficult in places as it crosses about 20 very soft sand dunes on its 12 kilometre route.

Info from Wikipedia:

On 18 August 1999 an eastbound freight train was waiting at the departure end of the crossing loop for the westbound Indian Pacific passenger train to pass through.[1]

The second engineman was waiting at the control panel for the points for the opposing train to pass through. Out of habit he had the control panel box unlocked and opened. Unfortunately, out of habit, he pressed the button to operate the points at an inappropriate time, and the opposing train was diverted at a speed of about 40 km/h (25 mph) into the loop where it could not stop in time to avoid a head-on collision. The actual speed of impact as recorded by the locomotive data logger on NR 15 was 27 km/h.

Twenty-one passengers and crew from the Indian Pacific were airlifted by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Kalgoorlie Hospital from the remote Coonana airstrip, 40 km (25 mi) from the crash site. Only two passengers were admitted for overnight observations. Westrail provided two Prospector railcars to transfer the remainder of the passengers back to Kalgoorlie.

All nineteen coaches of the Indian Pacific received varying degrees of damage, from minor internal damage to the write-off of luggage/smoking car HM311; some abandoned wrecked carriages are still at the site.[2] At the time, Great Southern Rail estimated the damage to the coaches to be of the value of $5 million. National Rail Corporation estimated the damage to locomotives NR15 and NR51 at around $1 million.

The building is still standing but has started to lean badly in the last couple of years. Usually stop & take some photos when I drive past it but this one would have to be my favourite. Taken on 35mm film.

Our two month Dec/Jan comp is now closed to further entries & it's time for you to vote for your favouites. Everyone can vote, you don't need to have posted any entries & your support would be most appreciated. For newer members .... it's very easy, just look through all the entries in the thread & click the 'Thanks' button on individual posts for those you wish to vote for.
You can vote for as many or few as you wish, & can even change your vote up until voting closes at 7 pm (Vic time) on Monday 30th January.

I encourage you to enlarge any entries posted as 'thumbnails', larger can bring the photo to life & gives the entrant a fair go.
You decide on the basis for your votes, however I suggest that the combination of clarity, composition, & adherence to the topic are worth considering.

Over to you

Cheers
