Culture, difference, & sharing have often been integral aspects of our travels. We’ve never done hotel & resort style holidays. Here, in the jungles of Tanna Island (Vanuatu) the extended family who’s dwelling was a scattering of a few easily replaceable grass huts (cyclones) a few feet away, who’s cooking stove was as in the photo, who have virtually nothing by any standards we know & yet who insisted when we met them as we walked, that we stay with them & eat with them. The photo shows a combined effort to prepare ‘Laplap’ a traditional dish like a yam pizza baked in leaves on the fire. On rare occasions a little protein is added if fish have been caught . Even small children carried large sharp bush knives. We felt uncomfortable about the huge divide between our western wealth & their subsistence existence, (no money) but came to understand that this was not a source of any envy on their part, but rather that they felt truly honoured by our acceptance of their hospitality. In fact it was us who felt envy of a people who could live so in harmony with their natural surroundings & with a sense of place & belonging that is impossible in modern western society. It was us who were honoured.

Cuppa - just a clarity question on the theme... It's a very broad topic and can be interpreted several different ways making it quite difficult.

Does 'Travel' mean that photos of culture and places 'elsewhere' are considered, or should it be showing a more stringent definition, along the lines of movement, and the act of traveling somewhere? Various ways of looking at it I guess.

Hi Ben, I gave this some thought & felt that whilst 'Travel & travelling shots could be interpreted as those focussed upon 'methods of movement' meaning photos of vehicles etc, my thinking was that despite this being (& because of it being) a vehicle based forum, we would likely get lots of photos similar to what we might get in many other topics. Nothing wrong with photos which contain primarily vehicles in this topic (as your excellent entry clearly shows - a study of mutual travel & mateship).

Travel is both a personal thing, & is always far more than just going from A to B or destinations, & I felt that a broader interpretation of the topic would allow folk a better chance of pictorially sharing what, to them, is important about their travels. I am looking forward to a wide range of interpretations of the topic. As always, the judges will be the final determinants of what others think of those interpretations. My advice fwiw, is for folk to try to tell fellow members something about themselves through their choice of entries.

So in essence I agree with you that it is a very broad topic, but rather than seeing this as making things 'difficult', I see it as providing an opportunity to share 'difference' & just as valid (& entertaining) as a more narrowly interpreted topic. The latter has more emphasis on a photo's technical qualities, the former has a bit more emphasis upon the capture of memories. Our competition is really just a bit of fun for all & I reckon a mix of broad & narrow topics encourages participation, which I see as part of the ‘glue’ which keeps our online community together.

Personally I would like to see a description accompanying each entry which tells the viewers a bit more about the context & perhaps why it was chosen, but that's just me.

Shouldn't this clarification be up to gubigfish, seeing as it's his/her choice for this month? I think we should all abide by the previous winner's subject decision.

A reasonable & valid perspective Plasnart & I'm happy to go with the flow.

Take this post as an invitation to gubigfish to post a response to FNQGU’s question. If gubigfish says different to what I've said we'll go with his answer, if he chooses not to post we'll stick with what I've said.

Please can we leave it at that ..... or start another thread to pursue discussion on the matter if anyone has something else they wish to add.

My view on all this is it wasn't meant raise so many questions. It was a general topic after looking at topics that had been selected previously. Personally Cuppa's viewpoint to me sounds fair and on a personal level the photos so far that have resonated with me the most are the ones of the locals enjoying themselves.

At the end of the day if you think the photo fits the theme of Travel/Traveling then by all means post it and let the forum members decide.
