Thought I might start some thing up, if it hasn`t all ready been done so.
Took a drive out to Gaeta and took a photo of this little bat. It was unharmed that I could see and thought it was a different spot for it to hang out.

Great idea, now I need to search through my pictures. Seen heaps of different wildlife over the years. Couple of memorable encounters that I don't have on camera are a dingo with a bush turkey in its mouth (I do have it on video but looks tiny). Two Sambar deer crossing the road at speed between myself and the 4wd 100 meters in front of me. And one of the biggest feral pigs I've ever seen up in Cape York, I though I was going to run over him as he disappeared in from of me.
I do have a picture of a Cassowary I'll post up when I'm on the PC.

Don't often take photos of the really good stuff because you only get a few seconds, and driving with a camera in hand isn't a good idea. By the time you stop it's gone.

Saw a pure white fox up around Nimmitabel about 2 years back running along the road about 5am.
Usual roos, donkeys, camels, like everyone else.
Had a Kooka fly in the drivers window and hit me in the side of the head about 15 years ago (was going for the ocky strap on the roof-rack I reckon) Fell down between my back and the seat. Had to stop and put him out on the side of the road. Lucky I was only going about 20kph looking for a house number.
Seen an emu "snowball roll" after tripping over a wire fence strand.... head....legs....head ....legs..etc. Was riding a trail bike at the time and laughed so hard I came off.

The one you won't believe is the "Robbo Panther" walking along the side of a tarred road in overcast east Gippsland rainforest just after sunrise. Wouldn't believe it either unless I saw it myself. Size of a large Kelpie but slightly shorter legs and a little longer in the body. Jet black and slinking like a cat. Turned around and looked straight at us - headlights were still on and it's eyes mirrored back blue/silver eye shine. Cat ears, short muzzle. My wife and I looked at each other "what tha ??" and by the time we looked back it was gone.

Be interested in any other sightings of the elusive "Panther" whatever it is.

Hey, the kids swore they saw a large cat near Mt Richmond, but whatever it was had already disappeared by the time I turned to look. I have seen and shot some bloody big feral cats, but nothing as large as these : http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2007/03/04/australias-new-feral-mega-cats/

Top idea Bush Ranger!. Where to start, have got hundreds of photos of wildlife from my travels since I bought my Patrol. Start out with this one of a Wedge Tailed Eagle that was feeding on a dead Roo in the middle of the road. Luckily he only flew up to the closest tree about 30 meters away & I was able to get a few shots. I was on my way up to Waa Gorge in Mt Kaputar National Park at the time. Always coming across these guys around where I live, usually they fly off before I can get the camera out!

Awesome awesome thread guys. This is why so many of us hit the road to see the real stars of this country!! These beautiful creatures don't give a flying fox about the NBN, fiscal reform, mortgages, economic development, Census debacles, car jackings, stock markets, superannuation, exposure to litigation, employment vulnerability, life insurance, death insurance, pre-paid funerals, interest rates, wheat price index, Foxtel subscriptions, registration fees, civic compliance, social media, facebook, etc etc etc that we "superior" beings envelop ourselves in. Life aint meant to be this way eh?

Brush-tailed Phascogale also known as a Tuan or the Common Wambenger. I was sitting around camp at night on the north coast of NSW when this little guy was running around, thought it was a rat at first, very fast & hard to see in the dark. Ended up setting the camera up with the motion detector pointing at the oak tree he was living in, still took about 20 frames to get a full picture of him.

They are carnivorous & also feed on nectar. Distant relative of the Tasmanian Devil. Found along the north coast of NSW, south coast of VIC, South west coast & Kimberly coast of WA & areas of the QLD coast.

At Cordabla NP / State Forest mountain bike park and came across this tree with saw dust at the base of it. A wood borer of some sort and didn`t know that I took a photo of a fly as well, until I resized the photo. I`ll have to learn how to focus fore ground / back ground together of photos. Have been told it can be done and if it can, maybe one I`ll do it.

Wedge tail eagle a few Ks out of Beverley, WA. Wasn`t quick enough to take a photo of it taking off from the ground. When I was driving around a sweeping bend, I notice a flock of sheep running from sone thing in the paddock and then I noticed some thing land on the ground, found out it was a Wedge tail eagle with another not far away. A third was circling towards the top of a hill in the paddock. The two that were in the paddock, had a bit of height to them and stood well above the stubble.

That`s what I was thinking and I was going to search hakea to see if there`s a look a like picture to help identify. Not the best picture though, but is a nice flower in person and quite common growing along the side of the road towards Beverley.

PS. The closest I could find is this Hakea trifurcata. Slightly different in colour and flower shape.

I'm still working on getting a Patrol but I see no shortage of wildlife pretty close to home (I am in Heidelberg in NE Melbourne). I'm not far from the Main Yarra Trail and I regularly go mountain bike riding out past Templestowe and within 5 km of my house I have seen kangaroos, wallabies, possums, wombats (I saw 8 of these two nights ago in a 1 hour night ride!!), echidnas, blue tongue lizards, tiger snakes, a koala, and believe it or not a platypus!!! The koala and platypus were both spotted from the Main Yarra Trail bridge over the Yarra near Templestowe on the same day and I nearly fell off my bike when I saw the platypus as the Yarra River was the last place I was expecting to see one (actually the only one I have ever seen in the wild). Have also seen heaps of foxes and thousands of rabbits but don't really count them in the scheme of things. We also regularly have a Tawny Frogmouth sitting on either our Hills Hoist or our verandah at night time and this time of year our flowering gum is in flower and we get heaps of Rainbow Lorikeets in it.

About 2 years ago I was mountain bike riding with some mates out near Smiths Gully (about half an hour North of here) and we saw a pair of wedge tail eagles (mum and dad) with a younger eagle about 70 m or so from the road we were on. We stopped to look and the dad was dragging a rabbit carcass up to the young one and we then watched mum and dad rip it apart so the young one could eat.....that was pretty amazing!!!

I think I'm pretty lucky to have all this so close to home given that I only live about 15 km or so from the CBD :)

A couple of bunnies caught by my Trail Cam. We saw some black rabbits nearer to town, about 22 odd years back. Over the years, we have seen black rabbits closer to our place. I have had trouble with the tops of our saplings being eaten, so I grabbed a cheap camera from Bunnings. In Central Vic, we used to catch the occasional coloured rabbit, especially around Maldon. They ranged from having a bluish tinge, to piebald, all the way to an orange tabby.

Nah! Its gotta be a deer, wallaby, roo or hare as the plants are a bit too tall for bunnies to get too. I happened to find a hare here many years ago, that was eating the seedling Manna gums we planted.

A friend of ours, just a few ks from our place, gassed a rabbit warren but he found a dead quoll at the entrance. He stopped using the gas after that. I am also hoping to film a quoll or bandicoot one on our place.

The camera, 32GB SD card and batteries only cost about $175.

This tiny thing came for a very quick visit, yesterday. I've had a go at identifying it but have had no success. Probably a very common bird or an immature one.

It has a grey back and a very short, dark tail, and stands 4-5cm tall. I would appreciate it if anyone could post its species name.

Cuppa
14th February 2020, 04:22 PM
To me it looks like & reads like a fairy wren of some sort, maybe a young one. However fairy wrens have a fairly long tail, maybe young ones don't? It's body shape & stance look fairy wren'ish. Colours are hard to tell as it the pink/purple artifacts look like something that editing has thrown up?

14th February 2020, 06:28 PM
That is what I thought too, but all the pics I have seen, show the young ones with a solid colour to their faces. I must add that it flew very fast and direct, not wobbly like a youngster.
