Just returned from a fabulous weekend away in Jamieson region... Mostly just relaxing with some scenic tracks around the place. Decided to stretch the shockers a bit at the slate mine. Slate mine is much much more treacherous than last time we were there last year, some very steep and sinister angles to get to the top now, but eventually got up there....
There was a one or two brown pants moments as the slate ground slid out under the car like a land/rock slide, while the car was already on a peculiar angle and mighty close to going over once...

You had the weather for it mate. The slate mine was our motocross play ground back in the day. And yeah the track to the left that takes you to the top was dicey last time i went up it.
I am so hanging just to get out there for three or so days and do absolutely nought in the bush.

See any wild life of the pink and flat nosed type?

It's very dug up now Mark. The right side entry more or less doesn't exist any more because a large portion of the cliff broke up and sort of covered entry points, you diff out in a second. Left is only way and is pretty gnarly... especially 3/4 of the way up. 105 Land cruiser twin locked struggled, and I more or less got up there without hesitation but with a few "almost see ya later 4.2" moments.

Would be good Rossco to have a forum meet out that way. Sheepyard flats, Frys, Tobacco flat, 6, 7, and 8 mile flat all great camp grounds. Even at pineapple flat too. Some good tracks out there, great views, as always from the high country. The back of Three Chain track is real interesting. Steep, rocky steps and some great switch backs. I had to drag BA's bro in laws Paj back up this track because he reckons the Paj could do it. He go almost all the way down on because gravity was helping lol. No chance of getting back up though...
I really miss this place. I havent been out that way for two years i think. Only because of the local constabulary...

The whole weekend I've not seen a single cop on the road.
A cop drove through the campsite in a patrol a few times but that's about it.

Hey John, yeah weather and the water in the rivers we came across were excellent.
I don't look at my fuel figures much ... If I need to fill up I need to fill up. I have a rough idea how many Ks per 2 tanks etc but off-roading etc throw it all out whack...

Fair enough what type of appraisal would you give your tyres,
from the hwy side of things to the off road ability, and what you aired down to>

Nice photos mate, looks like you had a great time!

Was this the first trip off road with the 4.2? How'd it go in comparison with the 3.0l?

Tyres went great John. Love these P3's. Aired down to 23 and that was perfect to absorb the rocky main tracks around the area we were in. No mud, just shale, rock, dust etc... And they delivered !! On the highway they are great too, no noise.

Thanks mate. This was the first off-road outing in the 4.2 for me yeah... Off-road they behaved identical, as practically the Patrols I had were twins apart from the engines, everything was the same from tires to suspension.
